History

Starting as a 4-year nursing program under the College of Arts and Sciences with Ms. Letty Wood as Dean, the Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) was established in 1947 by an American Missionary, Mrs. Paul Smith (nee Mary Marquez). Miss Ma. Concepcion M. Roble was the first Filipino dean of the college, from 1954 until her retirement in 1980

To enrich the student's professional preparation, the 5-year nursing curriculum was implemented in 1958. As mandated by the Department of Education and Culture however, the curriculum was back to its 4-year baccalaureate program in 1976 --- with revision in 1984 during the deanship of Dr. Dalisay M. Dumalag. Today in keeping with the university's mission-vision of molding students into adaptable and responsible citizen in a changing world, the nursing student is equipped with knowledge, skills and the desirable attitudes to respond to the needs and problem of society.

In 1980, the SUCN became accredite with the Philippine Acccrediting Association of Schools, colleges and Universities (PSASCU). In recognition of its high standars for quality education, the Department of Education, Culture and Sports awarded SUCN with a deregulated status during the deanship of Dr. Maria Tersita Sy-Sinda in 1990.

Since 1951, SUCN has maintained its standard of a 100% passing record in the Nursing Board Examinations except for different instances at 99%. In addition many of itsgraduates top these board examinations for which the professioal regulation Commission has awarded SUCN with plaques of recognition since 1991.

In 1994, SUCN was chosen by John Hopkins International Education for Reproductive Health (JPIEGO) and the association of Deans pf Philippine Colleges of Nursing Region VII. Furthermore, SUCN became pilot college in the offering the Computer Assisted Learning (MODCAL) on Reproductive Health. Not long after, SUCN established the
Adolescent Reproductie Health Satellite Clinic to cater to Sillimanians and other schools' needs.

In 1997-1998, SUCN was recognized by the commission on Higher Education as the Center of Excellence in Nursing Education (COENE). A five year memorandum of agreement has assured SUCN of CHED financial assistance aimed at improving faculty qualifications and other projects. Most of the faculty members earned its masters degree
through their assistance.

SUCN's openess to networking and a strong sense of advocacy towards promotion of health, sparkled relevance researches and module preparation of Domestic/Family Violence for nationwide use. SY 199-2000 ushered another CHED authorized program - the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivacy and Accreditation Program towards a BSN degree.

Inded, excellence has may facets. With nursing graduates positioned un many parts of the worls, this excellence has also been attained with the steadfast support of a vast network of SUCN alumni, benefactors and friends. With the university's motto of "via veritas vita" , the dean and the faculty members are one in vision through different lenses
towards best quality Christian nursing education.
