Teacher Elaine Kay Rae T. Abejero believes that time is one of the most important resources a person can have, and she is not one to waste hers. She is currently teaching at the Silliman University Elementary School while working on her Master of Arts in Teaching Major in Mathematics degree.

She graduated from the University in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education major in General Education through the support of the Pastor P. Pastor Foundation. The scholarship she received from the Foundation allowed her to continue her studies at a time when she would have quit due to financial constraints.

To make the most out of her stay in the University, Elaine decided to apply as a student assistant to help with her financial needs. She was assigned to the President’s Office for two years and to the Alumni Office for another two years.

Becoming a student assistant turned out to be one of the best experiences she had in the University. At both offices, she met people who supported and became close to her. Even after graduating, she often finds time to visit the offices where she used to work as a student assistant.

On top of maintaining a QPA of 2.5 for her scholarship and working as a student assistant, Elaine was also an active member of the SU Band and Chess Varsity. She loved occupying her days with activities that enriched her experience in the University.

Elaine says that Silliman has really opened the gates of opportunity for her. It helped her achieve her dream of becoming a teacher and continues to help her grow as a young professional. This is why, as a way of giving back, she decided to teach at the University.

Teacher Elaine is teaching Mathematics and Araling Panlipunan subjects to Grade 5 and Grade 6 students. She has only been teaching for a year but she believes in her heart that this is her calling; she loves being able to teach children and witness their growth. Although she tends to be a strict teacher, she encourages her students to raise questions and assures them that it’s okay to make mistakes as it is a natural part of learning.
