International Service-Learning
Service Learning program participants
Five of 16 participants from six Asian countries (Korea, India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Philippines) during the culimination program of the SU-ICU Service-Learning Model Program held August 2006.
Two senior Social Work students will be leaving for the International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan on October 3 to take part in a month-long international service-learning exchange program.

The two students, Karen May Ortega, a Filipino, and Lydia Malokozi, a Tanzanian, comprise the first batch of Silliman students to do service-learning in Japan. ICU, on the other hand, has been sending students to Silliman since the program started in 2003.

Funded by ICU and a product of the long-standing relationship between the two universities, the program seeks to expose students to the Japanese way of life and help facilitate cultural understanding. The students will be assigned to community sites hosting orphanages and elderly people, among others.

Organized for the first time in 2000, Bike for Life focuses this year on poor and disadvantaged children who are struggling to receive adequate cancer treatment and support.
Bike for Life covers more than 1500 kilometers, reaching Mindoro, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol and parts of Mindanao, with stops in at least 14 areas. This, the group does, “to bring the message of hope and life for kids versus cancer until we reach Davao City in two grueling weeks,” Mr. Auste said.

War Veteran
A war veteran views one of the numerous panels in the "War of Our Fathers" exhibit on the groundfloor of the SU Main Library.
An exhibit titled "War of Our Fathers…A Tribute to the Filipino Freedom Fighters" opened September 7 at the Silliman University Main Library. The exhibit will run until the end of this month.

Mounted by the Philippine Veterans Bank, the exhibit acknowledges the heroism of Filipino World War II heroes. It shows in almost 50 panels wartime photos, artifacts, documents and video presentation. Several panels are dedicated to WWII events and local heroes in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.

The traveling exhibit was shown last year in nine key cities in the country to coincide with the anniversaries of significant WW II events. This year, before it was brought to Silliman, the exhibit was shown in Cavite, La Union, FEU Manila, SM Mall of Asia, Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Bacolod City.
Prior to the launching of the exhibit, SU Director for Instruction and history professor Dr. Earl Jude Paul Cleope gave a lecture on the topic: “Re-examining World War II in the Philippines: The Negros Oriental Experience.” His lecture offered a different perspective of the War and introduced new teaching strategies in incorporating WWII in lessons.

Dr. Cleope is the author of the book “The Bandit Zones”, which is about the history of the free areas of Negros Island during the Japanese occupation, and another book due release in April this year, “Silliman World War II Diaries”, containing a compilation of WWII diaries written by Sillimanians.
Fulbright-Sycip Lecturer Speaks at SU

Dr. Christies Nielsen spoke on the role of women

Dr. Christine Nielsen

A professor from the University of Baltimore, who is the 2007-2008 Fulbright-Sycip Distinguished Lecturer, tackled issues involving business strategies in Asia and women in two separate lectures at Silliman University.

Dr. Christine Nielsen spoke on “The Global Chess Game…Or Is It GO?” in the morning of September 13 to a group of students and teachers coming from business schools in Negros Oriental. She explained how Asian companies are dominating the world by examining it in the framework of the GO – a board game that originated in ancient China which objective is to control a larger part of a board than the opponent as a result of having placed one's stones such that they form territories that cannot be captured by the opponent.

In the afternoon of the same day, she had an audience composed of NGOs and women’s groups for her lecture“Buhata Pinay – Do It, Filipina: Model Program for Women’s Development in the Philippines.” This lecture tackled women’s issues and concerns, and discussed Buhata Pinay, a movement concerning women that she helped establish a year ago.

Dr. Nielsen was with Dr. Esmeralda Cunanan, Executive Director of the Philippine-American Educaitonal Foundation (PAEF), who guested on Silliman’s daily morning radio show, Silliman on Air, and talked about scholarship opportunities in the United States
