senior Social Work students will be leaving for the International
Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan on October 3 to take
part in a month-long international service-learning exchange program.
The two students, Karen May Ortega, a Filipino, and Lydia Malokozi, a Tanzanian, comprise the first batch of Silliman students to do service-learning in Japan. ICU, on the other hand, has been sending students to Silliman since the program started in 2003. Funded by ICU and a product of the long-standing relationship between the two universities, the program seeks to expose students to the Japanese way of life and help facilitate cultural understanding. The students will be assigned to community sites hosting orphanages and elderly people, among others. | |||||||
![]() SU College of Computer Studies hosts this year's NCITE. | Some
200 participants from over a hundred colleges and universities around
the country are expected to gather at Silliman University for the
5th National Conference on Information Technology Education (NCITE)
on October 22 to 23. With the theme, “IT Educators’ Challenge: Building an IT-Enabled Nation”, the national conference aims to provide a venue for IT educators to share their expertise and update each other on developments in IT education. Research papers will be presented for knowledge sharing and for participants to explore areas of collaboration on development and implementation of IT projects in the country. | |||||||
NCITE
2007 is organized by the Philippine Society of Information Technology
Educators Inc. (PSITE), in cooperation with the SU College of Computer
Studies. This is the first time for NCITE to be conducted in the Visayas. In the previous years, it was hosted by institutions in Luzon and Mindanao: Ateneo de Davao University (2006), Angeles University Foundation (2005), University of Cordilleras (2004) and Lyceum of the Philippines (2003). | ||||||||

its stop in Dumaguete City on September 23, the Bike for Life, organized
by the Cancer Warriors Foundation, held a forum on cancer at the
Silliman Hall. The forum was co-hosted by the Silliman University
Church, the Student Organization and Activities Division and the
Silliman University Extension Program. Mr. James Auste, Executive Director of the Cancer Warriors Foundation, himself a cancer survivor, said, “Bike for Life is a journey that started in Metro Manila and will go all the way to Davao to raise awareness about cancer and our capacity to fight it altogether.” Organized for the first time in 2000, Bike for Life focuses this year on poor and disadvantaged children who are struggling to receive adequate cancer treatment and support. | |||||||
Bike
for Life covers more than 1500 kilometers, reaching Mindoro, Panay,
Negros, Cebu, Bohol and parts of Mindanao, with stops in at least
14 areas. This, the group does, “to bring the message of hope
and life for kids versus cancer until we reach Davao City in two
grueling weeks,” Mr. Auste said. | ||||||||

exhibit titled "War of Our Fathers…A Tribute to the Filipino
Freedom Fighters" opened September 7 at the Silliman University
Main Library. The exhibit will run until the end of this month.
Mounted by the Philippine Veterans Bank, the exhibit acknowledges the heroism of Filipino World War II heroes. It shows in almost 50 panels wartime photos, artifacts, documents and video presentation. Several panels are dedicated to WWII events and local heroes in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental. The traveling exhibit was shown last year in nine key cities in the country to coincide with the anniversaries of significant WW II events. This year, before it was brought to Silliman, the exhibit was shown in Cavite, La Union, FEU Manila, SM Mall of Asia, Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Bacolod City. | |||||||
Prior
to the launching of the exhibit, SU Director for Instruction and
history professor Dr. Earl Jude Paul Cleope gave a lecture on the
topic: “Re-examining World War II in the Philippines: The
Negros Oriental Experience.” His lecture offered a different
perspective of the War and introduced new teaching strategies in
incorporating WWII in lessons. Dr. Cleope is the author of the book “The Bandit Zones”, which is about the history of the free areas of Negros Island during the Japanese occupation, and another book due release in April this year, “Silliman World War II Diaries”, containing a compilation of WWII diaries written by Sillimanians. | ||||||||
Dr. Christine Nielsen | A professor
from the University of Baltimore, who is the 2007-2008 Fulbright-Sycip
Distinguished Lecturer, tackled issues involving business strategies
in Asia and women in two separate lectures at Silliman University.

Nielsen was with Dr. Esmeralda Cunanan, Executive Director of the
Philippine-American Educaitonal Foundation (PAEF), who guested on
Silliman’s daily morning radio show, Silliman on Air,
and talked about scholarship opportunities in the United States | ||||||||

Region 7 Director Dr. Enrique Grecia explains the role of guidance
counselors in the present age of globaizaization.

University hosted the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association
(PGCA) National Forum and Seminar Workshop conducted September 13
to 14, in partnership with the Professional Regulatory Board (PRB).
Some 70 delegates from around the country attended the national forum, including officials of PGCA and PRB, among them: PGCA National President Dr. Ma. Rosa I. Llanes and National Vice President Dr. Imelda Villar, and PRB of Guidance and Counseling Chair Dr. Rodelia Gabriel and members Dr. Lily Rosqueta-Rosales and Dr. Luzviminda Guzman. Dr. Enrique Grecia, Director, Commission on Higher Education Region 7, keynoted the opening ceremonies of the conference. He suggested that with globalization in our midst and the advent of mass tourism and information technology, some guidance centers should be open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. | |||||||

| The Silliman
University Kahayag Dance Troupe was the lone performing group
outside Luzon invited to a dance presentation during the 30th
anniversary celebration of the Philippine High School for the
Arts (PHSA) from September 14 to 16. Only nine performing groups
were selected to be part of the dance presentation. They performed at the PHSA Tanghalang Maria Makiling National Arts Center of the Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna and at the Francisco Santiago Hall of the Equitable PCI Bank Tower in Makati on September 14 and 16, respectively. | |||||||
| Six students of the Elementary Department of the School of Basic Education won in different contests during the 28th Annual National Grade School Convention held September 7 to 11 in Baguio City It was the
first time for Silliman to be represented in the convention organized
by the Children’s Museum and Library, Inc. (CMLI) and participated
