CHED Grants Silliman Autonomous Status

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has granted Autonomous Status to Silliman University for a period of five years, from March 11, 2009 to March 30, 2014. This is the third consecutive time for Silliman to be granted full autonomy.

In a letter, CHED Chairman Atty. Emmanuel Angeles congratulated Silliman, citing its “accomplishments, adherence to quality assurance, and commitment to public responsibility and accountability as a higher education provider” in receiving the distinction.

An Autonomous Status, which is given to a select number of private higher education institutions in the Philippines, recognizes Silliman’s ability to independently develop and offer quality programs that respond to the demands of time.

Silliman considers this distinction a challenge to further enhance its programs and services along its quad-focal functions of instruction, research, extension, and faith formation. This complements its thrust of widening its network of partners in the country and abroad.

Painting Course Opens SY 09-10

Silliman University will be opening a new course, Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Painting, by the start of School Year 2009-2010.

The new course offering is under the College of Performing Arts and explores the basic elements and principles of art, the role of art in culture, and innovative approaches to art education in the Philippines. It seeks to enhance the artistic skills of its students, preparing them for a career in visual arts, advertising, and other related fields.

Developing this course took time to ensure that a good faculty line-up is put in place. Its conception and opening this coming school year responds to a long-time dream of offering a full course in painting, apart from the required Fine Arts 51 class on art appreciation and the studio classes being offered during summer.

Those interested to comprise the pioneering batch are encouraged to: visit COPA on the second floor of Hibbard Hall / e-mail copa@su.edu.ph / call (035) 422-6002 local 250.

Summer Heat Hits Silliman

No. It’s not climate change.

Faculty and staff members of Silliman University are getting a hang of the summer heat. In keeping with the common reference to April and May as vacation months, they drop their office attires by 5PM, don a sporty look, and head off to the athletic courts on campus.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Office is organizing the 2009 Silliman University Sports Fest. This is the University’s way of providing an avenue where faculty and staff members are able to unwind and touch base with the young and the athletic in them after work, until the first week of June.

“This is Silliman’s way of cultivating within our colleagues appreciation for wholesome recreation and health consciousness, fostering long and lasting camaraderie and relations through activities that test the spirit of sportsmanship,” HRD Manager Atty. Pinky Tagle said.

Sports activities in line host nine groups formed according to sectoral affiliation: Faculty Association, Staff Association, Administration and Extension (merged), Cafeteria, Silliman University Medical Center Foundation Inc., Silliman Heights Subdivision, and three of its partner employment agencies: BBC Personnel Services, Century Security and Kadre Security.

Young and old, Silliman employees conquer the gymnasium, tennis court, and the East Quadrangle as they compete against each in basketball (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), volleyball (Tuesdays and Thursdays), and lawn tennis (in the afternoon of any agreed day). Their games are complete with their respective cheering squads.

The final match is scheduled June 3, a few days before the Silliman Fun Day. Up for grabs is an appetizing treat, on top of the medals and trophies.
