on Start of Classes, Swine Flu Released
In the midst of talks of postponement of classes
to prevent the possible spread of the influenza A (H1N1) flu, popularly
known as swine flu, Silliman University proceeds to follow its University
Calendar for School Year 2009-2010.
Classes
start:
• June 1 – School of Basic Education (Early Childhood,
Elementary, High School)
• June 8 – College
Enrollment
for graduate and post-graduate degrees is from June 1 to 5.
Swine
Flu Prevention Measures
Silliman values the health and welfare of its students and colleagues.
The University is undertaking precautionary measures to combat the
spread of swine flu. Posted strategically around campus are posters
adapted from the website of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). The posters contain information about swine flu
and its prevention and control. The same information is made available
in flyer form (to access, click
here) for the guidance of students and faculty and staff members
alike.
A memorandum has also been issued advising faculty and staff members
who have travelled abroad to self-quarantine in their respective
homes for at least a week, and seek medical assistance if symptoms
of the flu are observed.

CCS
Offers Master in Information Systems
The College of Computer Studies (CCS) offers this school year 2009-2010
the degree of Master in Information Systems (MIS).
MIS is a non-thesis degree program intended to prepare students
for industrial practice in project management, information systems
planning, design, development and management of technical personnel.
Graduate students in this program are expected to enhance the effectiveness
of their utilization of information technology in solving business
problems and improving or reengineering business processes of organizations.

Dr. Malayang is New ACSCU
President
Silliman University President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III was bestowed
the mantle of leadership of the Association of Christian Schools
Colleges and Universities (ACSCU) during its 48th National Convention
held May 11 to 13 at Silliman.
Dr. Malayang was unanimously voted president by the group composed
of delegation heads (mostly school presidents) during its business
meeting.
ACSCU is composed of 118 academic institutions from around the Philippines.
It is one of five member-associations of the Coordinating Council
of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA).
This year, the ACSCU president becomes the chairman of COCOPEA.

Unit Heads Join Digital Humanities Workshop in HK
College of Computer Studies Dean Prof. Dave Marcial
and Office of Information and Publications Director Mark Raygan
Garcia attended the workshop on “Digital Humanities in Asia:
Global Technologies and Local Knowledge” from May 19 to 22
in Hong Kong.
The workshop was sponsored by the United Board for Christian Higher
Education in Asia (UBCHEA) and the City University of Hong Kong.
It gathered humanities faculty, library, IT and communications staff
from 30 universities from 12 regions in Asia.
Considered “first of its kind” to be organized by UBCHEA,
the workshop sought to provide a forum for the sharing of: (1) information
about and promotion of digital literacy and digital teaching tools
and building of education capacity, with a practical focus on gathering,
preserving, and sharing indigenous knowledge, including culture,
language, religion, music, and art; and (2) interest in building
a sustainable network enable access to, training in, and sharing
of digital tools for teaching, learning, and research in the arts,
humanities, and social sciences.
