47th Cultural Season Opens with Coyiutos in Concert
The concert, which is part of a Visayan tour, is slated Sunday, June 28. The show will be preceded with a launch of the CAC’s cultural season’s slate at 6PM at the Luce Auditorium foyer, and the concert will start promptly at 8PM. The duo had wowed Manila audiences previously with a critically lauded concert at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The Philippine Star’s Rosalindo L. Orosa has written of that event: “Pianist Coyiuto was the epitome of elegance, refinement, sensitivity, and restraint, infusing it with the subtlest nuances. Flutist Caitlin, young though she is, brilliantly rendered, her tones full, firm, assured. Her vibrant performance was an eloquent augury of the brightest future.” The Coyiutos will be performing Franz Joseph Haydn’s Capriccio in G Major, Hob. VII:I, Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words, Cecile Chaminade’s Concertino for Flute and Piano, Op. 107, and Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio (with Joi R. Magadia on bass and Jorge F. San Jose on drums). Tickets
for the show are available at P200, P400, and P500. Tickets and
season passes for all other Luce Auditorium shows produced by the
CAC are now available at the College of Performing Arts office,
the Luce Auditorium office, and at the theater lobby before the
show. For inquiries and ticket reservations, please call (035) 422-6002
loc. 520. (CAC PR) Director of Instruction Dr. Earl Jude Paul Cleope and Director of Research Dr. Enrique Oracion participated in a workshop and a conference, respectively, held this month in Hong Kong. Dr. Cleope was one of the presenters in the workshop on "Liberal Arts Education in Asian Universities" from June 1 to 4 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The workshop was a follow-up activity of the consultation visits by Fulbright scholars in Hong Kong to various Asian universities in Korea, Indonesia, Philippines and India. At Silliman University, Dr. Spencer Benson of the University of Maryland was the lecturer on "General Education" in March. On the other hand, Dr. Oracion was at Lingnan University from June 1 to 5 for the 6th Pan-Asian Initiative on Service-Learning and the 2nd Asian-Pacific Regional Conference on Service Learning. He shared his paper, Intercultural Service-Learning as Crossing Borders: The Experiences of the Philippines and India. The paper was based on his research on the impacts of the International Service-Learning Model Program hosted by Silliman University in 2006 and by Lady Doak College in India in 2007. He compared the impacts on local and foreign student-participants of the community-based approach of Silliman University and the agency-based approach of Lady Doak College. Around 250 participants from 15 countries in Asia, Australia and United States attended the conference themed “Crossing Borders, Making Connections: Service-Learning in Diverse Communities”. Both
conferences attended by Drs. Cleope and Oracion were supported by
the United Board for Christian Higher Education, with the workshop
at the City University organized by the Hong Kong America Center. Officers of the student council of the College of Business Administration (CBA) and other business students attended the Annual CBA Leadership Training held June 11 to 12. The training was divided into six parts and was handled by different resource persons and facilitators. Mr. Raymund Sanchez, a Silliman alumnus who is currently Sales Director of The Hershey Company, Asia South Regional Operating Headquarters, handled the first activity on June 11. He handled the activity titled “Responsible Leadership by Example”. Participants, on the second day, had lectures on: “Financial Statement” by Accountancy Department Chairperson Prof. Loren Lachica, “Legal Accountability” by MBA Program Coordinator Atty. Gloria Futalan, and “Leadership Concepts” by alumna and SPI Publishing Services General Manager Ms Suzanne Lu-Bascara. Guidance counselors handled the activities on “Organizational Planning” and “Team Building”. Officers
of the
CBA student council concluded the training with a planning session,
detailing plans for School Year 2009-2010. New Certified Public Accountants Bongaciso,
