Alumni Gather in Florida for Tipon 2009

Hundreds of Silliman alumni gather in Orlando, Florida for Tipon 2009, an event that pools alumni in the United States, Canada and other parts of the globe once every two years.

This year’s Tipon runs from July 9 to 12. It starts with a welcome dinner at the Royal Plaza in The Walt Disney World Resort, the event’s main venue, and is capped with a worship service and a picnic organized by the Silliman Alumni of South Florida.

Tipon, which means “gathering” in English, provides an avenue where alumni rekindle and keep the eternal flame of Silliman spirit burning. This is also an occasion where alumni abroad interact with members of the Silliman Administration, headed by President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, and the Board of Trustees, with Chairperson Mrs. Juanita Amatong represented by Vice Chairperson Judge Candelario Gonzalez and Alumni Committee Chair Atty. Reinaldo Nolido.

CHED Designates Silliman National University of Agriculture

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has identified Silliman University as one of the higher education institutions to serve as National University/College of Agriculture (NUCA) for Region 7.

This NUCA distinction is a product of a selection process that supports the National Agriculture and Fisheries Education System (NAFES) of Republic Act No. 8435, the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act of 1997.

As an offshoot, Silliman University College of Agriculture Dean Prof. Santiago Utuzurrum represented Silliman in a workshop held July 7 in Manila. The workshop familiarized the deans of the NUCA-designated institutions with the NAFES provisions and assisted them in developing their respective work and financial plans.
