UCLEW
Celebrates Triad of Human Existence
The University Christian Life Emphasis Week (UCLEW) from July 12
to 18 reflects on the triad of body, soul and spirit.
Themed “Wellness is Wholeness”, UCLEW directs members
of the Silliman community to the importance of spiritual nourishment.
University Pastor Rev. Noel Villalba said one cannot achieve wellness
and wholeness when there is an absence of conscious effort to care
for the body, the soul, and the spirit.
Usually tackled in Galilean fellowships, where students are welcomed
in the residences of faculty and staff members at night for Bible
reflections and sharing, is the difference among the three.
Rev. Villalba, during the convocation for faculty and staff, discussed
that one has to live a healthy lifestyle. While a person can be
physically fit, he/she cannot claim to be whole. He said physical
fitness has to go hand in hand with the soul, a personality that
inspires goodness in others, and a spirit that binds him/her to
an enriching and sustaining relationship with God.
It is during UCLEW when 5-minute meditations before classes are
reinforced and devotions in the dormitories take a personal twist.
Dormers are individually given Christian literatures for them to
reflect on.
Silliman’s approach to education considers faith-formation
vital. This is manifested in the University’s guiding principle
of “building competence, character and faith”, and integrated
in its quad-focal functions of FIRE: faith, instruction, research
and extension.
