SUAKCREM Paper Featured in Top Int’l Journal

A paper by a team from the Silliman University Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management (SUAKCREM) was the feature article in the September 4 issue of theMarine Ecology Progress Series, one of the leading international journals in the field of marine ecology.

“Trophic and benthic responses to no-take marine reserve protection in the Philippines” is a product of a collaborative research between SUAKCREM and the School of Marine and Tropical Biology and ARC Center for Coral Reef Studies of James Cook University (JCU).

It was written by SUAKCREM Research Associates Brian Stockwell, Claro Renato Jadloc and Rene Abesamis, with Dr. Alcala and Dr. Garry Russ of JCU.

The article is posted for open access (Click this link: http://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v389/p1-15/).

On its website, the Inter-Science Research Publisher, the journal’s publisher, synthesizes the paper: “No-take marine reserves have the potential to prevent dominance of algae on coral reefs through the recovery of harvested populations of herbivorous fish. Using data from 15 reserves of varying ages and from fished sites in the Philippines, Stockwell and colleagues inferred a 15-fold increase in biomass of herbivorous fish, which coincided with a 13-fold decrease in macroalgal cover inside reserves after 11 years of protection. Rapid recovery of parrot fishes was the suspected primary cause for the decline in macroalgae. However, there was little difference in coral cover among reserves of different age. Even in fished sites, coral cover was much higher than macroalgal cover. Thus, there was no evidence that fishing of herbivores has led to 'benthic phase shifts'.”

This is the second time a paper by the SUAKCREM was selected top paper. The first time was in 1998 with Coral Reef, a paper by Dr. Alcala and Dr. Russ.

Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo Registers 300 Patrollers

Over 300 students from different schools and members of the Dumaguete City community registered with ABS-CBN’s Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo (BMPM) in a follow-through activity held October 25 on the Silliman Hall grounds.

The recent activity encouraged the public to be a BMPM patroller and be subscribed to the system through his or her cellphone number. After membership is activated, a patroller is able to receive updates and send feedback to ABS-CBN related to electoral anomalies and other election-related concerns in his or her own area.

BMPM was created by TV network ABS-CBN. On the ABS-CBN website, Maria Ressa, Head of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, described the idea behind BMPM as “simple”.

“[It is to] get the people to care and to take action. It’s people power with new technology!  If you see something wrong or something good, tell us about it.  If you see someone trying to buy the votes, snap a picture on your cellphone and send it to us,” Ressa said.

Silliman hosted the BMPM launching event for the province of Negros Oriental in August. That event registered around 600 Silliman students, faculty and staff as BPMP patrollers. Most of the new patrollers availed of COMELEC’s on-site registration.
