‘Share a Meal’ Highlights Christmas Celebration

This year’s Living Nativity Pageant symbolically marks the celebration of Christmas at Silliman University with students from the School of Basic Education entertaining and sharing a meal with around 500 kids from December 14 to 17.

A replica of the manger is being constructed at the Amphitheater which showcases the Silliman University Church well-lighted in golden yellow in the background. The view is most welcoming at night to passengers arriving at the pier, especially with Christmas lanterns hanging over the mini-gardens along Hibbard Avenue, fronting the East and West quadrangles.

Reinforcing the spirit of sharing and giving on Christmas, the Pageant gathers on its first three nights pupils from the Early Childhood, Elementary and High School departments to welcome to their respective families the kids in a simple dinner fellowship right after their performances.

Invited to join are kids from the project sites in Negros Oriental of the Silliman University Extension Program and children of the University’s Public Assistance and Safety Officers and project personnel.

On top of the free show that will give life the story of the birth of Jesus and feature talent offerings, the kids will receive Christmas presents from the pupils. The pupils have been divided into groups and each group has been assigned to a kid. They have been given the chance to decide among themselves what to give the kid based on his/her brief profile.

The new twist to the Pageant is consistent with the modest Christmas party that the University will hold for its faculty and staff. A portion of the Christmas party budget had been donated to the victims of typhoon Ondoy through the foundations of ABS-CBN and GMA7, and this year’s Christmas party will be celebrated over a simple menu mostly composed of Filipino delicacies.

Silliman Tops in Nursing

The national daily Manila Bulletin released November 26 an article citing statistics from the Commission on Higher Education ranking Silliman University as the top nursing school in the country.

Titled “152 nursing schools told: Improve or else...”, the article revealed CHED’s Top 20 nursing schools. Silliman was in first place with an average of 96.57 percent. St. Louis University and Trinity University of Asia ranked second and third, respectively.

Silliman has been consistently rating high in the licensure examination for nurses. It has also been successively designated by CHED as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education.

The article in the Manila Bulletin discussed in its first part CHED’s warning to 152 of the 456 nursing schools in the country to “shape up or be phased out,” highlighting the need to increase their licensure examination passing rates to avoid closure.

Free Tasting of Silliman Water at Cafeteria

For over a month now, the Silliman University Cafeteria has been making available to its customers Silliman Water for free.

Silliman Water is a product of the clean water system research and development project  of the Silliman University Clean Water Program (SUCWP). It is being undertaken under a three-year Project Covenant signed by both Silliman and the Advent Presbyterian Church.

Launched during the Founders Day in August at its site, the Charles Batchelor Building Annex of the College of Engineering and Design, the Program seeks to offer clean water delivery solutions and strategies to more low-income and marginalized communities in Negros Oriental and across the Philippines.

SUCWP is envisioned to be used to conduct small community clean water system research and development, test and evaluate alternative clean water system components and engineering and design approaches, and develop small community clean water project business, financial and operations plans, among others.

Involved in this Program are four academic units, Colleges of Business Administration, College of Law, College of Engineering and Design and Divinity School, and two non-government organizations, Magadalena and the Out of School Youth Peer Educators for STI/HIV/AIDS.

Distribution and refilling operations have begun in late September. Purchase is at present exclusive to members of the Silliman community or those with Silliman IDs.
