SU’s Climate Change Project is Main Feature on World Bank Site

The youth project headed by Silliman University that aims to generate innovative and practical ideas to address climate change is the main feature on the website of the World Bank (WB) Philippines.

To access the site, click: www.worldbank.org/philippines.

This is the second time for a project handled by Silliman to be featured on the homepage of WB Philippines. The first time was on its project “Operationalizing and Popularizing the World Development Report: Exercising Citizenship in Monitoring Transparency in Local Government Procurement,” which won a Civil Society Fund Youth Initiative Grant from WB Washington. The project involved in-school and out-of-school youth in nine areas in the Philippines.  Websites of WB Washington and WB East Asia and the Pacific carried the same feature on their homepages.

Alumnus Establishes Scholarship in Honor of Teacher

A high school alumnus whose teacher he considers instrumental in his reformation and success came back to the campus and established a scholarship in his teacher's honor.

Mr. Mariano C. Lao, a member of High School Class of 1957, launched the “Prof. Lina F. Rabor High School Scholarship” on February 26 at the Multipurpose Room of the Multimedia Center. Taking effect school year 2010-2011, the annual scholarship entitles full tuition to seven financially underprivileged but deserving students at all levels at the High School Department of the School of Basic Education.

Professor Rabor was Mr. Lao’ teacher in biology, a subject he admitted was his “leased liked.”

“I have decided to honor Professor Lina F. Rabor because she was like a mother to me – very loving, very caring and, most of all, very patient with me in guiding me every step of the way to help me become successful in the future.”

Mr. Lao, whose parents were based in Samar while he was studying in Silliman, had also stayed with the Rabors. He knew the husband of Professor Rabor, the late Dr. Dioscoro Rabor, a well-known zoologist who was a biology professor and later head of the Biology Department at Silliman, through their common interest in body building exercises. Their closeness led to Mr. Lao living with Dr. Rabor and his family when he was in third year high school until he graduated.

Describing himself during his high school years as a “radical student,” having been to several high schools before Silliman, Mr. Lao said his stay with the Rabors “was the turning point in my studies.”

“To this day, I am ever so grateful that they took me in and accepted and treated me like a member of their family. I was so inspired by the love and concern that they showed me and that encouraged me to do so much better in my school work,” he said.

Mr. Lao is chairman of the Stanpak Group of Companies, which he founded in 1966 soon after graduating from Silliman University. Stanpak quickly became the country's largest exporter of rattan furniture and accessories and a full line of handicrafts, assisting hundreds of suppliers in improving product design and quality. Through Stanpak, Philippine products reached major international retailers, including those in the United States (Walmart and Target), Italy (La Rinascente), France (Galeries Lafayette), Spain (El Corte Ingles), and Germany (Kanstadt and Kaufhof). In 1987, Stanpak was awarded the Golden Shell Award by the Department of Trade and Industry and Citron for pioneering the export of Philippine handicrafts to the European market.

“As I look back, I am sure that I would not have accomplished everything that I have today without her help. Who and what I am now I owe to her,” Mr. Lao said of Professor Rabor.

The Rabors were represented during the launching by the son of Dr. and Professor Rabor, Atty. Valfredo Rabor.
