Luce Foundation Inducted into Order of Horace B. Silliman

The Henry Luce Foundation is the newest inductee into the Order of Horace B. Silliman, the highest distinction granted by Silliman University on individuals and organizations for their continuing support for the development of the University's programs and services. .

Luce Foundation President Dr. Michael Gilligan represented the Foundation during the induction held March 25 at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, a building born out of a donation of the Foundation in 1973.

At the same ceremony, Silliman President Dr. Ben Malayang III unveiled the plaque honoring the entities and individuals behind the establishment of the Luce Auditorium. The plaque cites the contributions of the Luce Foundation and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA), which was represented by its president, Dr. Patricia Stranahan, and Vice President for Programs, Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann.

Part of the plaque reads: “The Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium is the fruit of the dreams and the continued efforts by the faculty, friends, and alumni of the University, which first stirred since its early years but especially rekindled during the country’s reconstruction from the ruins of a major world war. Their perseverance for its establishment was shared by Claire Isabel McGill Luce (1923-1971), wife of Henry Luce III, whose visit to Silliman University in 1968 with her family fomented a sincere desire to help the people of Dumaguete City create a place conducive to the development of their talents and potential, as well as establish a place that would showcase the best of our artistic and cultural heritage.”

Dubbed as the cultural center of the south, the Luce Auditorium was inaugurated on October 6, 1974 under the administration of then Silliman President Dr. Cicero Calderon.

Silliman Spearheads Earth Hour 2010 Dumaguete Launch

Earth Hour 2010 was successfully launched in Negros Oriental with the provincial government organizing a countdown and the city government of Dumaguete switching off lights at the Rizal Boulevard.

Silliman University coordinated the launching of Earth Hour 2010 on March 27, pooling four partner schools in calling for wider public observance of Earth Hour: Asian College of Science and Technology (ACSAT), Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alexandria (COSCA), Foundation University (FU) and St. Paul University (SPUD). The same schools worked together on Earth Hour 2009.

The schools' partnership encouraged the participation of the provincial government. Through the Environment and Natural Resource Department, the provincial government organized a countdown, convening participants representing the academe, private and business sectors, civil society, government and religious groups to witness the sequential dimming of lights of the entire Freedom Park and the Capitol building towards 8:30PM. For an hour, only candles kept the steps of the Provincial Capitol lighted, and performing groups and other activities entertained the participants until power was switched back on.

For its part, the City Government of Dumaguete, heeding the letter sent by the five schools, turned off lamp posts along Perdices Street and Rizal Boulevard and the lights around the acacia trees in the boulevard. Business establishments also observed Earth Hour, with most of the known fast food chains switching off their signboards.

The schools also came out with a joint radio advertisement about Earth Hour. A Facebook account, Oras Kalibutan Dumaguete, was also created featuring materials about Earth Hour.

A coordinated local launching of Earth Hour started in Dumaguete City in 2009 when Silliman University was tapped by the Department of Energy and the World Wildlife Fund to be the focal institution in the city. Last year’s celebration spearheaded by the same schools included a film showing, a forum, and an environmental theatrical performance at the Quezon Park.

Earth Hour is a symbolic act of switching off of lights for an hour to draw everyone’s attention, most especially decision-makers in government, to the issue of climate change. Last year, it inspired 1 billion people in 4,100 cities and 88 countries to switch off their lights. Over 10 million Filipinos in 647 towns, cities and municipalities joined in – more than anywhere else on Earth. This year, Earth Hour Philippines aimed for the participation of over 15 million Filipinos in over 1,000 towns and cities nationwide.
