| Six
Silliman alumni who have distinguished themselves in various fields
are this year’s recipients of the Outstanding Sillimanian Award.
They will be awarded in a special convocation on August 28 at the
Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium. This year’s recipients are: Justice Venancia D. Aldecoa (Government Service), Dr. Victor B. Amoroso (Botany), Dr. Juan Q. Bartolo Jr. (Community Health Service), Mr. Winglip K. Chang (Business), Dr. Perla Rizalina M. Tayko (Organizational Development) and Mrs. Olivia V. Yanson (Entrepreneurship). by the generosity of the man who donated $10,000 to start what is
now known as among the country’s premier universities, Silliman
University created the Order of Horace B. Silliman. The Order of Horace B. Silliman is a prestigious recognition conferred upon individuals, families and organizations whose gifts and donations with a value of at least P1 million continue to help realize the University’s mission of providing better opportunities to its students and the members of both Silliman and the larger community of Dumaguete toward building competence, character and faith. An induction ceremony is scheduled in the evening of August 25 at the Silliman Hall grounds by the bronze bust of Dr. Horace B. Silliman. To be inducted into the Order of Horace B. Silliman are: Dr. Romeo Ariniego, Rev. and Mrs. Alfredo Baliad, Mrs. Pat Mack Churchman, Dr. and Mrs. Rolando del Carmen, Ms Alma Golez, Dr. Angelo King, Dr. Pat Ling Magdamo, Dr. and Mrs. Victor Rich, , Dr. and Mrs. Enrico Sobong, Mr. Julio Sy Sr., Mr. Barry Thompson, Col. | Another inductee, the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, has already received the recognition through its President, Dr. Patricia Stranahan, in a special ceremony held August 17. The induction coincided with the three-day visit of Dr. Stranahan to Silliman University for a briefing on the long-standing relations between Silliman the United Board | ||||||||
| Supreme
Court Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno will keynote the 19th Silliman
University College of Law General (SULAW) Assembly and Alumni homecoming
on August 25, 10 a.m., at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.
In the same convocation, Chief Justice Puno will present the Outstanding SULAW Award in the field of Legal Education to Dr. Rolando V. del Carmen. Dr. del Carmen is a distinguished professor in Criminal Justice. He graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, (1953) and Bachelor of Laws, magna cum laude, (1956) from Silliman University. He later obtained the degrees of Master of Comparative Law from Southern Methodist University, Master of Laws from the University of California-Berkeley, and Doctor of the Science of Law from the University of Illinois. He has published several books and numerous articles in law, and is nationally and internationally recognized for his longstanding contributions to the criminal justice system. | ||||||||

Career and Placement Office is launching on August 24 the SU JobLink,
an online job recruitment website exclusive to Silliman graduates.
SU Joblink seeks to facilitate employment needs of graduating students and recent graduates with the help of partner companies. Silliman graduates can access the site, http://joblink.su.edu.ph, and register by keying in their names and their Alumni ID Number or SU Student ID Number. Rosales Casocot, an instructor at the Department of English and Literature,
won his third Palanca Award for his short story for children, titled
“The Last Days of Magic.” He has previously won for his
short stories in 2002 and 2003. Casocot has won other awards for his fiction, including the NVM Gonzalez Prize, and was chosen as one of the authors for the UBOD New Writers Series 2003 by the country’s National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). In 2002, he edited FutureShock Prose: An Anthology of Young Writers and New Literatures, which was nominated as Best Anthology in the National Book Awards given by the Manila Critics Circle. In 2005, the NCCA published his first short story collection, Old Movies and Other Stories. His children’s book Rosario and the Stories garnered him an Honorable Mention from the 2006 PBBY-Salanga Writer’s Prize, and his story “A Strange Map of Time” won the prestigious Gregorio Brillantes Prize in the Fully-Booked/Neil Gaiman First Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards. The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature is the most prestigious literary prize for writers in the Philippines. The awarding ceremonies will be held on September 21, 2007 at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Manila Peninsula in Makati City. | ||||||||
| In our press statement released in the morning of August 9, we stated that Silliman was awaiting an official communication from the Exodus group formalizing their understanding that Silliman will dismantle the fences they set up on July 19 at the Silliman University Divinity School Village Compound. We are pleased that we have received in the late afternoon of the same day a letter from Col. Constantino Sayson and his lawyer, Atty. Hansel Anito, posing no objection to Silliman dismantling the fences built by the Biliran Family at the Divinity School Village Compound. Silliman will
be communicating with Col. Sayson on the details of the dismantling
of fences, and will accordingly return to the Biliran Family the
dismantled materials. | ||||||||

| On
July 19, 2007, elements of the group Exodus fenced off an area just
outside the Silliman University Divinity Housing Compound near the
Power Plant. Silliman, protecting its claims, was forced to respond
by fencing off the larger area, enclosing their fence. | ||||||||

Deputy Minister of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic
Republic of Iran visited Silliman University on August 8 and met
with University officials, including the deans and faculty of three
colleges where most Iranian students are enrolled. | |||||||
Atty. Adel Tamano | The
School of Public Affairs and Governance (SPAG) has implemented its
integrative lecture series program, under which professors from
different fields are invited to Silliman University to speak on
various issues of both national and global concern. | |||||||
| Silliman
University alumna and Philippine team archer Jennifer Chan ranked
seventh in the recently concluded 44th Outdoor World Archery Championship
in Leipzig, Germany. | ||||||||
| Nine
students and two staff of the Japan Biblical Theological Seminar
(JBTS) are on tour in Silliman University from July 31 to August
12 to take part in this year’s Philippine Intensive Course.

| Dr.
Alcala’s publications and extensive research works have earned
him several fellowships and distinctions, among them, the prestigious
Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1992 and the Pew Fellowship
in Marine Conservation with Garry Russ in 1992-2003. He also received
the following awards: Outstanding Sillimanian in 1988, Outstanding
Negros Oriental Negrense in Science and Technology in 1991, and Outstanding
Dumagueteño in Science and Technology in 1998, respective.
Presently, Dr. Alcala serves as the Director of the Silliman University-Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management. | ||||||||

| Physical Therapy freshman Zoe Emilea Menguito won gold and 3 bronze medals in the ARAFURA Games at Darwin, Australia. She won a gold medal in the 50-meter Butterfly, and a bronze medal in each of the following categories: 400-meter Individual Medley, 200-meter and 100-metter Butterfly. | ||||||||
