Silliman Receives P6M from Uytengsu Foundation

The Uytengsu Foundation, Inc. donated close to P6.5 million to Silliman University for the renovation and rehabilitation of the Don Tirso Uytengsu Hall of the College of Engineering and Design.

Targeted to be completed before the second semester of this school year, the two-storey building houses a total of 12 rooms. There are five lecture rooms and a room for the Engineering student government on the second floor. Located on the ground floor are two computer rooms, a hardware room, an activity room, and two offices.

Major works on the building include roofing, flooring, and installation of glass windows. When completed, the building will have similar features as the other Uytengsu buildings on campus: Uytengsu Foundation Computer Center and Uytengsu Foundation Computer Studies Hall.

Popularly known as the Uytengsu Hall of the College of Engineering and Design, the building was established in 1960. Its construction was made possible with the help of the late Mr. Tirso Uytengsu, a Silliman alumnus and former member of the Board of Trustees, who had previously given a memorial scholarship to bear the name of his son, Wentworth, a freshman pre-law student at Silliman at the time when World War II broke and who died at the hands of the Japanese kempeitai.

Women Artists to Gather at SU

Acclaimed women artists from Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and the U.S. will come together to explore the dynamic convergences between eastern and western cultures and to interact with the local arts and academic communities of Manila, Dumaguete City, Bacolod City, and Bago City from June 15-30, 2008. The project is part of Woman As (Mythical) Hero (WMH), the TRADE ROUTES pilot project within the Southeast Asian region.

These include Arahmaiani (performance and installation artist from Yogyakarta, Indonesia), Brenda V. Fajardo (painter from Manila), Kai Syng Tan (media installation artist from Singapore), and Angel Velasco Shaw (video maker from Manila and New York).

The WMH project asks: Are women heroes necessary? Who are they in everyday life? How are these women culturally and socially perceived and represented? How can they function in different contexts as multi-dimensional symbols and as human beings?

Through public forums, artist talks, art exhibitions, workshops, performances, and video screenings, these women will engage in academic exchanges, formal and informal sharing of their stories, cultures, and social concerns with local artists from the different regions. Such interactions aim to break through social barriers, like ignorance, discrimination, and lack of education, hence allowing for more dynamic relations between Southeast Asian, Asian American, and non-Asian artists.

WMH will open in Manila at the Philippine Educational Theater Association Multi-Purpose Hall on June 15 at 6:00 P.M.. The project team will then go on a full series of talks, workshops, forums, exhibits, video screenings, and performances in Dumaguete, mainly at Silliman University, from June 19 to June 23. Afterwards, they will set up an exhibit at Orange Gallery in Bacolod City, which will run from June 27 to July 5, and conduct talks, forums, and workshops there as well. To culminate the project, Brenda Fajardo will host an Arts Festival at her Hanao-Hanao farm in Bago City on June 29 from 5:00 PM onwards.

In partnership with Kababaihan sa Sining at Bagong Sibul na Kamalayan (KASIBULAN) and BAGLAN, Woman As (Mythical) Hero is supported by Arts Network Asia, the Asian Cultural Council, the Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program and Institute at New York University, Ford Foundation Jakarta, Silliman University, Foundation University, the National Arts Council of Singapore, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Negros Museum, Negros Oriental State University, and the Orange Gallery.

For the complete list of events in Manila, Dumaguete, Bacolod, and Bago City, please refer to the Woman As (Mythical) Hero schedules. For inquiries, questions, and reservations, please contact Loen Vitto at loenmv@yahoo.com. To get a copy of the compete WMH press kit or to book interviews with the WMH artists during their stay in the Philippines, please email Angel Velasco Shaw at angelshaw@earthlink.net.
