SU calamity response program aids Naga landslide survivors

After days of heavy rainfall, a hillside in Naga City, Cebu, collapsed on several houses, killing at least 56 people on September 20. The landslide covered about 80 hectares of land and displaced some 1,716 with 7,653 individuals in six barangays. Sixty(60) people have been declared dead, 28 are missing, and 18 are injured. Homes and means of livelihood have been lost and suffering survivors need help.

Silliman University, through its Continuing Calamity Response Program (CCRP), conducted a relief operation in Naga City on October 12. A team of students, faculty, and staff from NSTP, Extension Program (Silliman Water), Elementary Department, Senior High School Department, SOAD, and the University Church raised a total of 602 Dignity Kits consisting of hygiene goods with linen and bath towels from donations of students, individuals, and institutions.

During the operation the team was able to distribute a total of 432 kits to survivors in six evacuation centers in the calamity area:

NPC Colon Elementary School –         101 Kits

Church of Latter Day Saints-Naga City – 25 Kits

CEPOC Central Elementary School – 34 Kits

Langrad Elementary School – 174 Kits

San Fernando Gym – 68 Kits

Cabugnahun Covered Court – 25 Kits

The remaining 175 Kits are allocated for the survivors stationed at Enan Chiong Activity Center (ECAC) where the “Solar Portapure” of Silliman Water is located.

Sixty-four (64) student, faculty, and staff from different units of the University also volunteered to provide psychosocial intervention to the affected communities from October 15 to 19. The team is conducting post trauma stress debriefing to survivors at 11 evacuation centers now housing evacuees from areas seriously affected by the landslide. The team brought with them gifts of school kits prepared by volunteers at the School of Basic Education.
