SU endowment fund honors Singapore’s third president

Pres. Betty Cernol-McCann signs memo of agreement with Dr. Janamitra Devan to set up the President & Mrs. C. V. Devan Nair Scholarship at Silliman University. The agreement was signed with Dr. Janamitra Devan, son of the third president of Singapore Devan Nair Chengara Veetil who was considered one of the founders of modern Singapore, serving the country from 1981 to 1985.

Dr. Janamitra Devan studied in Silliman and is now an international consultant in business and economics based in the US. He said the motivation for initiating this endowment fund for scholars at Silliman University is his appreciation for his Silliman education, the results of which “surprised his parents” and turned him from a playful president’s son who wanted to join the Singapore national (military) service into an academically interested “A student” who went to business school in the US and proceeded to get a PhD. His only requirements for the scholarship are: i) it should be for pursuing a program in the humanities, and ii) it should be given to a deserving student who is in need financially.
