Silliman received its first Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device from the Silliman Alumni & Friends of San Diego on November 7, 2017.

Nursing alumna and US-based nursing professor Dinah Peñaflorida together with volunteer friends of the San Diego Alumni Chapter, Dr. Steve Hadwiger and his wife Mariquit Calunsod-Hadwiger, gave a comprehensive demonstration on how to use the device to representatives from different units of the University to ensure that there are respondents capable of using the device effectively and safely when needed.

Dr. Hadwiger and his wife are both retired professors of nursing at Truman State University.

AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. It is an easy-to-use device that has an automated video instruction to guide respondents when administering first aid to people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
