MGB and
SUAKCREM explored Basay, Negros Oriental
Jasper Leif Maypa
Magandang Gabi Bayan (MGB) and SUAKCREM explored the
town of Basay last November 17, 2001. Cesar Paterno, writer/segment producer,
and Nomer Ramores, cameraman, represented the MGB team. Jasper Maypa, videographer,
and Dioscoro Inocensio, dive buddy, represented SUAKCREM. Actin local officials
headed by Ba. Capt. Judalex Actub and Elmer Lugatiman accompanied the team.
MGB documents what’s above the water, while SUAKCREM documents what’s underwater.
The team went to Barangay Actin to take a look at their
lampirong (Placuna placenta). Unfortunately, there were only few
left in the area because it was harvested two months before. It used to be
very abundant in that place.
Then, the team proceeded to Bongalonan Marine Sanctuary.
There were lots of beautiful fishes and some big ones. The coral reef was
flourishing even though sometimes that place can be very rough. Moreover,
a rare display of thousands of congregating convict fish (Acanthurus triostegus)
was witnessed.
The next day, the team explored the higher grounds to
document the endemic “Negros Cave Frog” (Platymantis spelaeus), and
spotted deer (Cervus alfredi).
Basay is also one of the sites of ARCBC (Asean Regional
Center for Biodiversity Conservation) Project of SUAKCREM.
