History

During the early years of its founding and up to the war years, the College of Arts and Sciences was composed of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Sciences - under the Department of Instruction. The departments which existed under the set-up were: Bible (1902); Biology (1909); Chemistry (1909); Mathematics (1920); English (1923); and Spanish (1936).

From 1936 up to 1947, the College of Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts operated independently from each other. Starting in 1947, however, both colleges merged to become the College of Arts and Sciences.

Immediately after the organization of the CAS, three more departments were added, namely: Agriculture (1950), Social Sciences (1956), and Speech and Theatre Arts (1967). And this internal changes within the departments took place. The Bible department became the department of Bible and Philosophy; then was split to form two different departments, only to be fused again to form the Religious Affairs. Later, it was again merged to form the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Likewise the Spanish Department became the Department of Languages.
