A year has passed and Ms. SU 2007, College
of Business Administration’s Sarah Martin, finally relinquished
the crown to her successor, Rhoebe Christie Paez of the College of Mass
Communication, during the Ms. Silliman 2008 coronation night last August
25.
“Let us always remember, it is not just the sash and crown that
defines a Ms. Silliman,” Martin said in her final-walk speech.
“Look deeper into her heart and soul, and search for inner beauty
and strength.
Turning over the crown gave her mixed feelings of sadness and joy. Sad
that she had to let go of the crown, but happy that at last another
woman would experience what she had experienced that memorable night.
During her reign, Ms. Silliman 2007 developed a consciousness for poor
children.
“My wish for this year’s Ms. Silliman is that she continue
the program, Ms. Silliman Pays It Forward, which I started (in collaboration
with) the Student Government and all Sillimanians who donated school
supplies to unfortunate kids. I also hope that she would work with her
fellow contestants, because I observed that they were very close to
one another. I hope that their bond will remain and eventually grow,”
Martin said.
She revealed that when asked to represent the College of Business Administration
in the pageant, she felt excited but also feared disappointing the people
behind her. However, she said the possibility of failure and disappointments
make life meaningful and exciting.
“It’s all about taking chances, welcoming new experiences
and doing your best every chance you get.”
She said she is still the same person after that experience, “only
now, I have more happy memories to look back to.” – Interview
