Silliman University’s (SU) Department of Anthropology and Sociology joined the Ata community in Barangay Canggohob, Mabinay, Negros Oriental, on October 6, 2026, for the celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Month, marking the second consecutive year of the department’s participation following the renewal of its ties with the community.
Carrying the theme “Empowering Indigenous Peoples: Strengthening Rights, Culture, and Ancestral Domain,” the celebration brought together Ata communities from the barangays of Canggohob, Lamdas, and Mayaposi in Mabinay, and Sab-ahan in Bais City, along with representatives from government offices, institutions, and other organizations.

The daylong celebration featured traditional competitions highlighting the Ata community’s cultural heritage, including Daray ug Otoan, tribal dance, and Balitaw contests.
The department’s participation followed an invitation from Ata tribal leader Kabubungan Rostom Bornea, reaffirming the relationship reestablished between SU and the community in 2025 after more than four decades of limited engagement.
Representing the department were Dr. Rey G. Gimena, chairperson; Asst. Prof. Christine S. Batiles; and Meljoe S. Loreto. They participated in the opening Palihi alongside the community’s Council of Elders. Also joining the delegation was SU alumnus and current Anthropology graduate student Von M. Dagpin.

The celebration also highlighted the continuing challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples,
particularly threats to their ancestral lands and their efforts to protect their rights,
cultural heritage, and way of life.
Through its participation, the Department of Anthropology and Sociology reaffirmed
its solidarity with Indigenous communities in their pursuit of self-determination
and its commitment to meaningful community engagement that responds to their evolving needs and concerns.
Observed annually in October, Indigenous Peoples’ Month recognizes the Philippines’ diverse Indigenous communities and promotes greater awareness of their cultural heritage, rights, and continuing struggles.
