SU to host int’l confab on Christian philosophy, sustainability & development
Silliman University (SU) will host the 2023 Societas Ethica Philosophica, Inc. (SEPI) International Conference on Christian philosophy, sustainability, and development on September 28-30, 2023.
The event will be held onsite at the SU campus and online via Zoom.
Keynote speakers for the conference are Prof. Dr. Glenda Bonifacio from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, who will talk on “Ethics of Care, Feminism, and Christianized Science Philosophy: Seeking Common Grounds for Economic Sustainability”; and Prof. Dr. Rozzano Gregorio Ramon Agustin Decastro Locsin from Florida Atlantic University, USA, who will talk about “Theism, Transhumanism, and Posthumanism on Nursing and Rehabilitation Healthcare.”
The conference also includes plenary lectures on innovation and indigenous knowledge systems for environmental ethics and education; ecosophy, enlightened anthropocentrism, and pragmatism for sustainable development and landscape restoration; philosophy, education, and the environmental crisis; transforming contemporary cultures and Filipino core values; Filipino virtue ethics; and cannabis policies, sustainable development, and human rights.
Participants will present their research papers and case studies on the intersection of Christian philosophy, sustainability, and development under the following themes: Filipino and Southeast Asian Philosophies and perspectives that discuss care for the environment and their significance for combatting the modern environmental predicament; theological and philosophical foundations of Christian perspectives on sustainability and development in Southeast Asia; the role of Christian churches and organizations in promoting sustainable development in the region; case studies of successful or unsuccessful initiatives that integrate Christian principles with sustainability and development goals; the impact of Christian perspectives on sustainability and development on policy-making and implementation in Southeast Asian countries; and the potential for interfaith dialogue and collaboration between Christian and non-Christian actors in promoting sustainable development.
The SU Philosophy Department is co-organizing the event with SEPI and the Center for Philosophy and the Humanities and the Research Institute for Culture and Language of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
Established in 2017, SEPI is a professional organization that aims to promote Christian philosophy through conferences, seminars, symposia, and fora. SEPI is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
