Alumni Updates (August 8-14)

The Silliman University Alumni Association Sydney Australia Chapter (SUAASACI) held a Founders Day celebration on August 6, 2016, recalling memories of High School and Church life, especially with the upcoming centennial of the Silliman University High School and the Silliman University Church. They also held their own version of Miss Silliman Sydney Australia beauty pageant. Among the attendees was Lucy P. Jumawan-Sauer, 2010 Outstanding Sillimanian in the field of Performing Arts. The Chapter, under the leadership of its president, Enrico Garcia Jr., has been actively supporting the Silliman University Marina Mission Clinic.

The Silliman Vikings (Silliman University Alumni Association Kingdom of Norway) had a triple celebration on August 5, 2016 at the home of Candy Bation Olsen in Jessheim, Norway – its chapter’s first anniversary, Silliman University’s 115th Founders Day, and the first of its annual summer party. It brought alumni and friends together to a gathering made more fun with a boodle fight dinner and some trivia games. Chapter president Josephine Tragico Terremocha and chapter adviser Perla Somosa Jahre’s leadership has been a strong anchor for this young alumni chapter.

Bacolod-based alumna Balma Dulamal-Nandwani, founder and owner of Optimized Solutions Corporate Training, an organization which specializes in soft skills, will speak on “10 Soft Skills You Need” to Mass Communication seniors in Silliman University on August 25, 2016.  Balma’s lecture is one of the highlights of the College’s 50th year anniversary celebration this month.

Balma, who started her career in corporate training in 1985 with Dale Carnegie, Philippines, points out that more than technical skills and knowledge, one needs to take time “to build effective soft skills” as they assist one in achieving “overall job happiness and satisfaction.”

Balma finished kindergarten, elementary and high school from Silliman, and obtained her degree in Mass Communication in 1981 from the University. She holds certificates from the United States and the United Kingdom, and is a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programing.
