Environmental Stalwart is Eminent Persons Lecturer

Puerto Princesa Mayor Hon. Edward S. Hagedorn graces the 110th Founders Day of Silliman University as this year’s resource speaker for the Eminent Persons Lecture Series.

Hon. Hagedorn will speak on “Environmental Governance” on August 26 at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium. He will address an audience composed of Silliman alumni, academics, students, and other sectoral representatives in Negros Oriental.

As local chief executive of Puerto Princesa since 1992, Hon. Hagedorn championed the concept of sustainable development through environmental protection and conservation. He successfully established Puerto Princesa as a model of eco-tourism, paving the way for it to earn a spot in the Hall of Fame as Philippines' “cleanest and greenest” city.

One of the more recent and popular initiatives under his leadership was a campaign that elevated the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) as a finalist in the search for New 7 Wonders of Nature. The PPSRNP is touted as one of the most important biodiversity conservation areas in the Philippines.

The Eminent Persons Lecture Series was inaugurated in 2008 with former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos as its first speaker.
