First Batch of Donations Hits 13 Tons; SU Makes 2nd Appeal

The first batch of relief goods for the victims of typhoon Yolanda that Silliman University received following its call for donations issued November 11 reached approximately 13 tons. 

Silliman has already endorsed these donations — consisting of different food items, rice, water and clothing — to the Philippine Navy which will take charge of shipment for distribution to the typhoon victims in Leyte and Samar. A team from the University, led by Assistant ROTC Commandant Major Rafael Crescencio Tan, Jr., personally endorsed the goods on November 16 to the Philippine Navy stationed in Cebu. 

Breakdown of the first shipment: 405 boxes of assorted food items with 1,761 packs; 76 sacks of assorted food items with 762 packs; 68 boxes and 152 sacks of assorted used clothing; 102 boxes of mineral water with 1,791 bottles; and 3 boxes sardines with 372 cans.

Silliman U endorsed to the Philippine Navy yesterday in Cebu the first batch of donations it received weighing approximately 13 tons. SU-ROTC Assistant Commandant Maj. Crescencio C. Tan, Jr personally turned over the donations, along with some ROTC cadets. Helping unload the shipment at the Cebu pier were Army reservists. Silliman thanks the Matiao Transport Services, Inc for transporting all the donations for free. 

The University appeals for more donations for the typhoon victims in other provinces. It is targeting its second shipment on November 25. Donations in kind or cash are centralized to the ROTC Center at the Silliman Ballfied. (Click here to view more photos.)

2nd Appeal for Donations; Target for 2nd Shipment: November 25 (Monday) 

The University continues to appeal for donations. It is targeting to send its second batch of donations on November 25 (Monday), and is considering as recipients other provinces that have also been badly hit by the typhoon.  Silliman reiterates its appeal: 

Silliman University is urging everyone to donate food, clothing, medicines or cash to the victims of typhoon Yolanda. We hope you can share your blessings with our brothers and sisters in the badly hit areas, particularly Leyte, Samar, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Mindoro and Palawan.

All donations are centralized to the Roman T. Yap ROTC Center at the Filomeno Cimafranca Ballfied of Silliman University. This area is selected for better mobility of transportation options. We have made arrangements for all donations to be transported from the Ballfield directly to the affected areas.

We also call on our partner establishments and merchants in Dumaguete and the pharmacies to pitch in.

To help us quickly sort and endorse the donations, we request for the following steps to be observed:

1. Tagging. Indicate the affected area for which you intend to make the donation.
2. Sorting. Segregate donation according to the following (Boxes according to the grouping will be made available):
(a) Food items — Packed items are appreciated.
(b) Clothing — Segregate those for (i) children, (ii) men, and (iii) women.
(c) Cash — Personnel at the Business and a Finance Office will issue official receipts.
(d) Medicines — Check the expiry date; it should not be earlier than February 2014.
