Newton’s laws of motion are three physical laws that form the foundation for classical mechanics. These laws basically describe the relationship between a body and the various forces acting upon it, and the motions in response to these forces.
Regardless of the complexity of the very nature of these concepts, it almost seems like a coincidence that someone’s life can easily be likened to Newton’s laws of motion. Just like the first law which tackles a body’s tendency to remain resistant to any change in its state of motion or inertia, her focus and determination in reaching her goals remained firm and unwavering despite challenges that came along her way. Her intellectual prowess catapulted her far beyond her level and made her finish her studies at the age of 19 – reflecting Newton’s second law on acceleration. The third law that states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction – is a reflection of her untiring faith in God, reciprocating all of the blessings that she has received as a form of genuine gratitude to the Almighty Creator.
Teaching Physics at the Silliman High School Department for eight years now, she inspires us with her story.
Mrs. Jessa V. Logronio was born on September 7, 1987 in Dumaguete City. The youngest of six children, Jessa recalls a fun childhood spent with siblings, cousins and neighbors in a game of “balay-balay”. Her father, a carpenter, and mother, a former barangay official, etched strong in her the value of family and education.
Likened to kids that star in the Promil milk commercial, Jessa is not far from being tagged one of them. She entered kindergarten at age five but was accelerated to a higher level just a few weeks into school, after her teachers thought she would fit more a tougher academic environment. Her teachers were right. Year in and out, Jessa proved to be that “girl genius”. She graduated salutatorian at the Cantil-e Elementary School and was the valedictorian in her class at the Junob National High School.
Becoming a teacher was one of the careers that Jessa envisioned for herself. But pursuing this dream in one of the country’s top universities, Silliman, was a daunting task. This, especially as her parents also needed to put through school her other siblings. An opportunity came knocking on her door in the form of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholarship. It was her ticket to enrolling in Silliman in 2003, under the Secondary Education major in Physics program.
Her desire to finish college was evident alongside her conscious efforts to free her parents up of the financial responsibility to help her earn her diploma. A consistent academic scholar, Jessa was successful at receiving grants to finance the rest of what the DOST scholarship was not able to cover. She worked as a student assistant at the Office of the Registrar and Admissions, and, while she could have been more active, prioritized extra-curricular activities in college.
Jessa’s hard work paid off. In 2007, she graduated from Silliman with Latin honors, magna cum laude, in the field that she had invested herself in.
After graduation, Jessa joined the High School Department in Silliman, at age 19. She was still quite young, that she found it challenging to deal with her students who were only a few years younger than her. But this new environment would soon be routine, a source of confidence for her, that in two years’ time, she became that passionate mentor any student desires having in class.
Jessa beams with pride and fulfillment when asked about her experience as a teacher – an experience that has developed within her an expertise that she shares with the community through her involvement in the Gawad Kalinga.
Aside from being a caring mentor to several students at the High School Department and an inspiring community volunteer, Jessa is also a proud mother of her nine-month old baby boy, Jurmin Bismarck. She shares the joy of family life with her husband, Bismarck, a mechanical engineer. They first met in 2005, officially became a couple in 2012, and got married on May 24, 2014.
The presence of Jessa brings out a certain aura of happiness and fulfillment as she looks forward to finishing her master’s degree in Environmental Science from Silliman. She is eager to create her own blog and test her entrepreneurial skills in the near future. Indeed, Jessa is an epitome of success amidst life’s challenges. Her existence reminds us that hope, fueled with determination and never-failing Christian faith, is a gift you that have to live out.

I have a creative side, especially in interior designing; although I haven’t fully explored this talent of mine.
