CWTS conducts webinars on environmental protection and sustainability
The Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) component of the National Service Training Program in Silliman University (SU) recently concluded its webinar series on environmental protection and sustainability.
The webinar series conducted by CWTS from February 13 to 27, 2021 featured experts and advocates who talked about topics on the Filipino youth’s role in environmental protection, climate change, and biodiversity.
The speakers during the webinar series were the following: Aprille Roselle Juanillo, who talked about youth leadership; Franz Anthony Alejano, a former CWTS cadet and third-year Biology student, talked about the role of Filipino youth in environmental protection; Cornelio Guantero, senior economic development specialist of the National Economic Development Authority Region VII and lecturer in Climate Change & Public Policy at the University of San Carlos School of Law & Governance, talked about the current state of the Philippine environment and climate change adaptation; and Jerome Montemayor, board secretary and chair of the Knowledge Management Committee of the Foundation for the Philippine Environment, talked about “Youth and Biodiversity” and shared potential opportunities for CWTS cadets in environmental advocacy and work.
“The webinar series on environmental protection and sustainability [exposed CWTS] cadets to the current situation, the realities besetting the environment. We also aim to encourage and spark inspiration to them to be advocates and stewards of God’s creation, knowing that Silliman University is at the forefront of environmental awareness and protection,” said Dr. Giovanni T. Macahig, Registrar and Admissions officer and CWTS Coordinator.
Macahig said CWTS “hopes to be an established source of expert knowledge” by introducing relevant, motivating, and inspiring topics for the cadets.
“With this in mind, we aim to invite experts, advocates, and leaders that have made a valuable contribution to the community and the country,” he added.
