AC Dumaguete-SU conducts InformNation2022
In celebration of World Press Freedom Day, the American Corner (AC) Dumaguete – Silliman University held a three-day summit on “Media and Information Literacy – Empowering Citizens Through Right and Truthful Information” on June 15-17, 2022.
The summit is part of the InfromNation2022 initiative of the US Embassy. It aims to train and equip individuals with critical thinking skills in reading and understanding the networks of misinformation and disinformation in the country and to address different challenges and issues in the information age.
Speakers from different disciplines shared their knowledge and expertise on particular topics such as misinformation, disinformation, media literacy, information literacy, journalism, activism, and extremism.
Dr. Ma. Cecilia M. Genove, program chair of the Broadcast Communication Foundation University, narrated how journalism has evolved through the changing times and stressed the importance of media and information literacy.
Dr. Jason Cabañes, professor and research fellow of the Department of Communication, De La Salle University-Manila, lectured on “The Imaginative Dimension of Digital Disinformation.”
Asst. Prof. Melita Aguilar, director of the Silliman University Office of Information and Publication, talked about the “Techniques of Fact-checking and Addressing Misinformation On and Offline.”
Iphraim Cabristante, digital section editor, ABS-CBN News, shared his knowledge and experience with “Journalism in the Information Age.”
Brig. Gen. Leonardo Peña, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade, lectured on “How Extremist Ideologies are instilled in the Minds of the Public? What Can We Do About It?”
The AC Dumaguete culminated the Media and Infomation Literacy Summit with a community-based activity through an information drive on spotting and addressing misinformation on and offline at Balugo, Sibulan, Negros Oriental on June 20, 2022.
