tWS bags 3rd prize in editorial writing at nat’l fellowship

The Weekly Sillimanian (tWS) won third place in editorial writing at The Spectrum Fellowship 2024 and 9th Campus Press Awards held at the Nature’s Village Resort, Talisay City, Negros Occidental on June 4-7, 2024.

The winning piece, “War on History,” is an editorial on the genocide in Palestine, which was published on the school paper on November 10, 2023.

The Spectrum Fellowship is an annual gathering of campus journalists around the country, organized by The Spectrum, the official student publication of the University of De La Salle-Bacolod.

This year marked the comeback of the fellowship after a five-year hiatus.

With the theme “Sentinel: Fortress of the Free Press,” the four-day fellowship featured plenary discussions and talks by Inday Espina-Varona, Jade Mark Capiñanes, Avon Ang, Keith Brandon Cari-an, Kenneth Rolando Guda, Raffy Lerma, Cartoonist ZACH, Romeo Subaldo Jr., Rep.Raoul Manuel, Julius De La Peña, Kyle Anne Villariza, and Brell Lacerna.

Five tWS staffers participated in the event including its Managing Editor, Anna Avery Zapanta; Features Editor, Zarelle Villanzana; and news writers, Jan Andrei Elizalde, Genno Gabriel Rabaya, and Allianah Junnice Bolotaulo.

During the events’ fellowship night, Rabaya and Elizalde were crowned Mr. Fellowship and first runner-up respectively after two rounds of question and answer and an advocacy presentation.
