SU GSC gathers VisMin schools for Crafting an AI Integration Framework workshop
The Silliman University (SU) Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center (GSC) hosted a two-day workshop on “Crafting an AI Integration Framework” on November 13-14, 2024, at the Dr. Mariano Lao ICI Laboratory.
The workshop aimed to equip participants, most of whom are key administrators, faculty, and staff members, with the knowledge and tools necessary to develop tailored frameworks for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their respective institutions.
Facilitated by Dr. Dave E. Marcial, GSC director, the workshop brought together representatives from several esteemed universities in the Visayas and Mindanao, including Central Philippines State University Main Campus, Holy Name University, Angeles University Foundation, Central Philippines State University, Surigao del Norte State University, Bukidnon State University, Central Philippines State University – San Carlos, Liceo de Cagayan University, Universidad de Zamboanga, and Visayas State University to learn from SU’s best practices in formulating its own framework in the use of AI.
Marcial emphasized the importance of crafting policies and guidelines that ensure AI integration is effective, ethical, and suited to the unique needs of each university.
For the two-day workshop, participants were tasked with producing a draft or outline of their school’s AI integration framework as output by the end of the event. These include proposed policies and guidelines to govern the responsible use of AI technologies in teaching, learning, and other administrative functions.
It can be recalled that SU, through the GSC, has also taken the first steps in designing the “Gen-AI Integration Framework in Teaching, Learning, and Operations,” strengthening SU’s “commitment to embrace digital transformation that leads to a multitude of innovations.”
SU’s framework acknowledges AI as a groundbreaking tool for education, emphasizing its significant impact on classrooms, administrative functions, and the broader campus environment. It underscores the potential benefits of AI in enhancing teaching, learning, and the University’s operational and managerial processes.
Marcial shared with the participants that in the process of updating SU’s vision, mission, and goals the Board of Trustees’ mandate was that “whatever we can do, we have to start regulating it,” encouraging the participants to start the work of creating these guidelines and policies and, in turn, implementing them.
The workshop highlighted SU’s leadership in fostering innovation and technology-driven solutions in education. By bringing together institutions from across the regions, the workshop demonstrated a shared commitment to preparing schools for the transformative potential of AI.
The Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center has spearheaded the creation and implementation of policies and guidelines focused on establishing classroom policies in alignment with the approved framework. It continues to play a pivotal role in equipping educational leaders with the tools and insights necessary to navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape.
