TODAY we celebrate the 199th birth anniversary of Dr. Horace B. Silliman.
Born on December 3, 1825, Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman was an American philanthropist and industrialist who played a pivotal role in the establishment of Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines.
In 1899, Dr. Silliman donated $10,000 to the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions to establish an industrial school in the Philippines.
The institution was founded on August 28, 1901, as Silliman Institute, named in his honor. Initially a small boys’ school with 15 students, it grew rapidly due to its innovative curriculum that combined vocational training, liberal arts education, and religious values.
Over time, it developed into Silliman University, becoming one of the premier Christian educational institutions in the Philippines and Asia.
We remember Dr. Silliman’s vision, philanthropy, and enduring legacy.
