SUCN faculty and students win awards at int’l confab
Two research papers presented by faculty members and students from the Silliman University College of Nursing won second best papers in their respective categories during the 13th International Conference of Nurses (ICONS13) held at the Crown Regency Residences, Cebu City from November 21-22, 2024.
Dr. Theresa A. Guino-o, Assistant Professor Zorinna M. Luague (podium presenter), Assistant Professor Uenavil Anne E. Junio, and Dr. Evalyn E. Abalos won second place in the professional category for their paper, “Capacity Building for Mental Health of Older Persons: A Participatory Research.” The study explored how limited resources affect the mental health of older adults and involved assessing, implementing, and evaluating socially and culturally appropriate interventions to address their needs.
Meanwhile, SUCN students Irielle Gerlette Torremocha, Anjeli Merecido, Trisha Samantha Rubio, Christian Anthony Cual, Dianne Cristdel Bato, Anne Lorraine Visorro, Fiona Lugatiman, Maria Veronica Miquiabas, John Eric Espina, and Nicole Halley Suan won second place for their paper, “Adherence to Therapeutic Management of Chronic Conditions Among Older Persons.” Their research examined chronic illnesses in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis, and the associated challenges—polypharmacy, cognitive decline, and social isolation—that hinder adherence to treatment regimens. Through focus group discussions with senior citizen organizations in a rural barangay in Dumaguete City, they identified six key themes affecting treatment adherence and emphasized the importance of personalized, patient-centered, and culturally sensitive interventions to enhance health outcomes and quality of life for older adults. The group was advised by Guino-o.
ICONS13, themed “Achieving Equity and Sustainable Development through Evidence-Based and Innovative Nursing Practice,” brought together student nurses, clinical instructors, nurse practitioners, and researchers to explore emerging trends and strategies aimed at advancing nursing practice and promoting equitable, sustainable healthcare.
