Rappler lead researcher to speak at McLuhan Forum in SU

Silliman University (SU) will host the Marshall McLuhan Forum Series on Responsible Media, featuring Jodesz Gavilan, an investigative journalist and lead editorial researcher at Rappler.

This event is set for February 19, 2025 (10:00 AM) at the Audio Visual Theater.

Gavilan was awarded the 2023 Marshall McLuhan Fellowship by the Embassy of Canada – Philippines for her “unique commitment to investigative journalism, to informing the public about decisions and policies that affect their lives in support of the public interest.”

As a journalist covering human rights and impunity for Rappler and its investigative division, Newsbreak, she has produced in-depth reports on topics such as former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, the International Criminal Court, and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

She will deliver her lecture at SU titled, “Data and Journalism: Utilizing Open Source and Online Research for Human Rights and Investigative Journalism” with an introduction by Carlo Figueroa, Senior Public Affairs Officer of the Embassy of Canada – Philippines.
