SU-CBA secures 3rd place, Best Presenter Award at national business case competition

A team from the Silliman University College of Business Administration (SU-CBA) clinched third place in the HSBC Philippine Business Case Competition held on April 5, 2025, at the Business Resource Center of Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City. Team member Michael John M. Mirasol was also awarded “Best Presenter” among all participants.

Competing as Team Visionaries, the group was composed of five third-year SU-CBA students: Chaiane Claire T. Lim (Financial Management), Elle Mikaela C. Macias (Business Analytics), May Ann E. Valencia (Business Economics), and Mirasol (Business Analytics). The team was coached by Asst. Prof. Rene Juntereal, chair of the BSBA Financial Management Program. They competed against 15 other teams from universities across the country.

The competition featured two rounds. In the first round, 16 teams were divided into four clusters—A, B, C, and D—and given three hours to prepare a case analysis. The top team from each cluster advanced to the Final Round. Team Visionaries emerged as the leading group in their cluster, earning a place in the finals. During the Final Round, teams were given a new case and three hours to analyze it, followed by a 20-minute presentation and a 20-minute oral defense before a panel of senior executives.

Reflecting on the competition, Mirasol described the experience as “transformative.” He said, “It deepened my understanding of how real-world business challenges are rarely straightforward.

Identifying the core problem from a complex set of information requires both critical thinking and strategic focus.”

Valencia emphasized the value of collaboration, saying, “Competing in the HSBC competition taught me the true value of teamwork. Our success was made possible by everyone’s sincere efforts and eager spirits.” Mirasol echoed this, adding, “Teamwork and diverse perspectives can lead to innovative and meaningful solutions.”

The HSBC Philippine Business Case Competition serves as the national qualifier for the HSBC Asia Pacific Business Case Competition, an international event organized by the Asia Case Research Centre (ACRC) for undergraduate students, held annually in Hong Kong.

Ceejay Hernandez, Head of Sustainability for the Philippines at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Limited, noted that the competition elevates the traditional case method by moving it beyond the classroom into a global arena. He added that it aims to: (1) sharpen participants’ business acumen and global outlook, (2) nurture future business leaders, (3) broaden career opportunities and boost employability, (4) bridge academia and the global business community, (5) promote diversity and inclusion, and (6) foster international collaboration.

SU-CBA Dean Dr. Wilma Tejeros-Libarios lauded the students’ achievements and expressed her appreciation to the faculty who guided and supported them.
