Nursing alumna launches book on dementia

Alumni Update August 4 – 10, 2025

Nursing alumna Josefina Villarin-Pantig will launch her book Do I Have Dementia? A Nurse’s Journey of Discovery on August 22, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. at the Silliman University Library.

Villarin-Pantig was inspired by two remarkable patients whose unique behavioral presentations of dementia challenged and motivated her to write the book.

Dr. Glenda S. Arquiza, former Chairperson of the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission–Board of Nursing and 2024 Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee, offers a preview of what readers can expect:

The book offers a compassionate exploration of the dementia journey, drawing from the author’s experiences as a professional nurse. It highlights the commitment to evidence-based care while weaving in humor and spirituality. Families often struggle with the reversal of roles as loved ones shift from independent decision-makers to individuals with memory loss and self-care deficits, placing a heavy emotional, physical, and financial toll.

Dr. Arquiza further describes the work:

Part memoir, part guide, Do I Have Dementia? provides practical strategies for carers and families navigating dementia’s challenges. Filled with wisdom, compassion, and real-life stories, this book empowers readers with the knowledge and confidence to face the journey with grace. The narratives are heartwarming, reflecting the patience, resilience, and Christ-centered compassion of a skilled nurse. This book is an excellent resource, especially for nursing students and beginning professional nurses.

Villarin-Pantig, a Registered Nurse, graduated from Silliman University High School in 1970 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1976. She later completed her Master of Public Health at the University of the Philippines–Manila. Now retired and based in Auckland, New Zealand, she remains active as a church volunteer and an engaged member of her local Bible study group.
