The Weekly Sillimanian (tWS), the official student publication of Silliman University, earned recognition at the 16th National Campus Media Conference held in Angeles City, Pampanga, from September 25 to 27.

tWS Editor-in-Chief Kean Andrei Bagaipo won first place in News Writing – Tertiary English, while Creative Director Jasper Dominic Miranda placed fourth in Backpack Journalism – Tertiary Filipino.

Other members of the tWS delegation who participated in the competition included Jan Andrei Elizalde (Backpack Journalism – English), Genno Gabriel Rabaya (Visual Journalism: Reels), Lysander Kendrick Tiu (Sports Writing), Paul Ray Donaire (Editorial Writing), and Carl Anthony Calumba (Editorial Cartooning).

In addition, Rabaya, Tiu, Miranda, and tWS Adviser John Edgar Rubio joined the Profile Feature Writing and Layouting events.

Over 1,000 campus journalists from various colleges and universities nationwide convened for the three-day conference, which featured a series of workshops, contests, and fellowship activities. GMA Integrated News anchor and journalist Ivan Mayrina delivered the keynote address on this year’s theme, “Beyond the Headlines: Empowering Campus Journalists as Catalysts for Truth, Integrity, and Emerging Trends through Ethical Storytelling.”

Participants from the elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels competed in a range of writing, video, and publishing events, both in individual and group categories, and came together for a solidarity night that fostered camaraderie among student journalists.

Organized by the School Press Advisers Movement, Inc. (SPAM, Inc.), the annual conference aims to strengthen the skills of campus journalists and promote ethical storytelling in an era of emerging media trends.
