GE5 classes launch magazines and infographics showcasing campus perspectives and communication trends

Several General Education 5 (GE5) Purposive Communication classes showcased their creativity and critical thinking through the launch of student-produced magazines and infographics at the Silliman University Main Library on October 6, 2025.

The event featured six magazines titled The ResonanceSmoke and MirrorsRhythm of the RootsLet the Young TalkThe Sillimanian’s Echo, and Capsule. These publications reflected student perspectives on campus life, social issues, and the evolving landscape of communication. Every element of the magazines, including the articles, layout, photographs, and advertisements, was conceptualized and created by the students themselves.

Infographics from other GE5 sections were also exhibited. These covered a wide range of topics such as election awareness, social media consumption, misinformation detection, Reddit use, and flood control initiatives.

The infographics were produced under the guidance of Dr. Joan C. Generoso and Asst. Prof. Ronelaine B. Picardal, while the magazine projects were mentored by Kaycee L. Melon and Asst. Prof. Deo Mar E. Suasin of the Department of English and Literature.

The launch program opened with remarks from Generoso, chair of the Department of English and Literature, who commended the students’ creativity and collaboration. Each group presented the concept, cover, and contents of their respective magazines, highlighting the diversity of topics explored, such as language transformation, artificial intelligence, functional illiteracy, and gender issues.

Some magazines focused on cultural commentary, with articles about brain rot, the performative male, thrift culture, art spaces, and pickleball. Others examined communication’s role in addressing social challenges, including youth smoking and political discourse.

To conclude the event,  Circulation Librarian Herminia A. Lazalita formally received copies of the magazines for inclusion in the Library’s collection.

The magazines are currently on display at the Main Library until the end of October and are also available online through a dedicated website. The project formed part of the GE5 Purposive Communication midterm requirement, organized in partnership with the Department of English and Literature, the Language Learning Center, and the Silliman University Library System.
