SU Peer Advocacy Facilitators champion youth-led mental health at National Conference
The Silliman Peer Advocacy Facilitators (PAF) represented Silliman University at the 1st National Conference of the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association, Inc. (PGCA) – Peer Organization of the Philippines (POP), held on October 3, 2025, at St. Paul College Pasig, Inc., Pasig City.
With the theme “Empowering Youth: Embracing the Power of Peer Support,” the event gathered more than 600 participants from peer organizations across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to promote youth-led mental health advocacy and strengthen peer support networks in schools.
Throughout the conference, participants took part in sessions designed to unlock innovative programs by discovering fresh, actionable strategies for effective peer-to-peer support that they can bring back to their schools; forge resilient networks by learning how to build strong, lasting partnerships among peer facilitators across the country; and create truly safe spaces by gaining practical tools and strategies to promote inclusivity and emotional well-being within school communities.
The team from SU showcased the active role of young leaders in fostering mental health awareness.
Shakira P. Jacoba, a fourth-year Psychology student and current Student Chapter President of POP, delivered a presentation titled “Becoming a Peer Facilitator.” Her talk emphasized empathy, active listening, and inclusivity as essential skills for peer facilitators in building supportive communities.
Zillea Phey Alreen Lampinez, a second-year Psychology student, led an interactive session that engaged participants in group activities and discussions designed to strengthen peer-to-peer support strategies and spark collaborative ideas.
The conference was spearheaded by Dr. Jaruvic C. Rafols, current president of the PGCA-POP Executive Board and Head of the SU Guidance and Testing Division (GTD) under the Office of Student Services (OSS). Under his leadership, the event underscored the transformative power of youth collaboration in advancing mental health advocacy nationwide.
