
SU Biology inaugurates upgraded cell & molecular bio lab, DOST-PICAARD visits SU

Guests from DOST-PCAARRD paid a courtesy visit to Silliman University (SU) President Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann on November 19, 2025, before joining the Biology Department the following day for the inauguration of the upgraded Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory at the Science Complex.
Representatives from DOST-PCAARD’s Institution Development Division included Engr. Wilmar J. Lastimosa, Victor P. Alcantara, Sherwin R. De Los Reyes, and Rudolph John M. Cabangbang, while those from the Forestry and Environment Research Division were Dr. Dalisay E. Cabral, Dr. Christine D. Santiago, and Dionisio P. Babiera.
Led by Dr. Nadia Palomar-Abesamis, the event marked a significant step forward in the university’s efforts to strengthen molecular research and biodiversity conservation.
The ceremony the next day, November 20, brought together representatives from DOST-PCAARRD, DENR-PENRO, Foundation University, Old Dominion University, and the Talarak Foundation, who witnessed the unveiling of the 72-square-meter modernized laboratory.

Project leaders and partners emphasized that the laboratory’s completion was made possible through strong institutional support, collaborative research initiatives, and funding from DOST-PCAARRD.
The upgraded laboratory is expected to elevate SU’s research output, support conservation efforts in the region, and further enhance international scientific partnerships.
