SUSG and OCESL volunteers lead feeding program for Canlaon evacuees

Silliman University volunteers traveled to Barangay Panubigan, Canlaon City, on November 22, 2025, to conduct a feeding program for residents affected by Typhoon Tino (internationally known as Typhoon Kalmaegi).
The initiative, under the Bangon Canlaon campaign, was organized by the Silliman University Student Government’s (SUSG) Health Emergency Response Team (HERT) with support from the Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning (OCESL).

Twenty-one HERT volunteers and two OCESL chaperones took part in the activity, which began at 2:00 p.m. The program aimed to provide nourishment, comfort, and basic support to families still recovering from the typhoon’s impact, particularly in the northern part of Negros Oriental, one of the areas hardest hit.
The feeding program served rice porridge (pospas), prepared with meat and vegetables to provide a warm and nutritious meal. To encourage eco-friendly practices, the food was distributed in paper bowls with paper cutlery.
Beyond meal distribution, the initiative also offered a blood pressure-taking station managed by trained HERT first aiders, along with recreational activities for children to help ease stress and offer emotional relief.

To broaden the program’s reach, the committee gathered donations from individuals, partner groups, and local organizations.
Contributions included water jugs from the Girl Scouts of the Philippines; solar lights from the REDSHIELD Fraternity and Sorority of Silliman University; envelopes of school supplies from the Provincial Youth Development Council; and rice sacks from the OCESL.
Residents from several evacuation sites in Barangay Panubigan benefited from the activity, including those who stayed at the Barangay Panubigan Multipurpose Hall, Panubigan Elementary School, and the Canlaon City Gym—facilities that continued to shelter families displaced by flooding and storm damage.

The event formed part of HERT’s ongoing disaster response and humanitarian efforts as the community worked toward recovery.
