Silliman Park-Bantayan Bible study group extends rice aid to La Carlota residents affected by Typhoon Tino

Alumni Update December 15 – 21, 2025

The Silliman Park-Bantayan Bible study group’s expression of “faith at work” came to a full circle as members reached out to residents of Hacienda Camile in Barangay Cubay, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, one of the communities severely affected by Typhoon Tino.

La Carlota City Mayor Jose Luis “Joelu” Jalandoni (BS Agriculture ’78 FS) led the distribution of five-kilo rice assistance to 94 households of Hacienda Camile on December 3, 2025.

Dr. Erwina Frances B. Jalandoni (SUHS ’75, BS Biology ‘79) hands out a rice relief pack to a resident of Hacienda Camile.

The relief effort was made possible through donations from the Silliman Park–Bantayan Bible study group of Silliman University Church, whose members include Dr. Erwina Frances B. Jalandoni, Bill and Susan Soldwisch, Dr. Van, and Ptr. Iris Tibus, Mae Magdamo, Nenita Tayko, Joanne Gomez, Julie Gajunera Gadingan, Ruben Bokingo, and Cobbie and Dessa Palm.

Mayor Jose Luis “Joelu” Jalandoni (BS Agriculture ’78 FS) hands a rice pack to an elderly resident of Hacienda Camile in Barangay Cubay.

The Silliman Park-Bantayan Bible Study Group was established by Silliman University (SU) faculty residing at Silliman Park in 1957, which makes the group the oldest running Bible study group of Silliman University Church.

Local officials of La Carlota City said that the continued support from faith-based groups offers hope to families still recovering from the typhoon’s impact.

Dr. Erwina Frances Jalandoni and local leaders listen as residents share their situation after the typhoon.
