SU recognized at CHED ICONS Awarding 2025 for global impact and ethical innovation

Silliman University was among the Philippine higher education institutions recognized during the CHED ICONS Awarding 2025, held on December 10, 2025 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). T

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) highlighted universities making measurable global impact through sustainability, innovation, and ethical leadership.

The recognition draws from Silliman’s strong showing in major international rankings, particularly its inclusion in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025, where it joined 121 Philippine higher education institutions advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through instruction, research, community engagement, and institutional governance.

Silliman also gained global distinction in the WURI 2025 rankings, placing 205th worldwide and 70th in the Ethics category. This recognition was anchored on the University’s Free Computer Education for Senior Citizens program, a flagship initiative that promotes digital inclusion, ethical technology use, and lifelong learning among older adults.

Implemented in partnership with community stakeholders, the program provides free, structured training on basic computer operations, internet navigation, email use, online safety, and access to essential digital services. Designed to be age-appropriate and learner-centered, the sessions are facilitated by trained University staff and volunteers, enabling senior citizens to engage more confidently with digital platforms for communication, public services, and everyday transactions. The initiative has been cited for addressing digital inequality while advancing ethical responsibility in technology access, particularly for vulnerable and underserved sectors.

SU’s commitment to inclusive and socially responsive education is also reflected in the sustained community engagement of the Silliman University Library System. Through its SU Library Reach Out (SULibRO) and related extension initiatives, the Library has established barangay reading centers, donated hundreds of books to public schools, and conducted information literacy activities with partner institutions across Negros Oriental, reinforcing the University’s SDG-aligned goals on quality education, reduced inequalities, and community partnerships.

CHED officials emphasized that the CHED ICONS Awarding recognizes institutions whose local programs generate broader societal and global relevance. Silliman University’s inclusion affirms its integrated approach to education that combines academic excellence, ethical innovation, and community-centered service to create lasting impact beyond the campus.
