Celebrating the 2026 Outstanding Sillimanian Awardees

One of the Philippines’ most celebrated contemporary writers, Professor Merlie M. Alunan has devoted more than six decades to enriching Philippine literature while championing the revival of regional literary traditions. A multi-awarded poet, fictionist, essayist, editor, and literary scholar, she is a recipient of numerous Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, National Book Awards, the UMPIL Award, the Sunthorn Phu Award for Poetry, and recognition from the Royal Society of Literature. She earned her Master of Arts in English (major in Creative Writing) from Silliman University in 1975, where she trained under Dr. Edilberto K. Tiempo and National Artist for Literature Dr. Edith L. Tiempo. The discipline, humanism, and literary excellence that she imbibed at Silliman became the defining principles of her lifelong vocation as a writer, teacher, and cultural advocate.

Throughout her distinguished career, Professor Alunan has been a leading force in restoring regional literature to its rightful place within Philippine letters. As Professor Emeritus of the University of the Philippines Tacloban College, she has produced landmark works that have transformed the study and appreciation of Visayan literature, including Sa Atong Dila: Introduction to Visayan Literature, Susumaton: Oral Narratives of Leyte, and Tinalunay: Anthology of Waray Literature. These pioneering publications have preserved oral traditions, advanced mother tongue education, and established enduring foundations for the scholarly study of Waray and other Visayan literary traditions. More importantly, they have demonstrated that regional literatures are not peripheral to Philippine literature but constitute its very heart and diversity.

Beyond her own writing, Professor Alunan’s greatest contribution has been nurturing literary communities and empowering new generations of writers. Through decades of creative writing workshops, mentorship, and literary leadership—from the Silliman University National Writers Workshop to initiatives across the Visayas and Mindanao—she has inspired countless emerging authors whose works now enrich contemporary Philippine literature. Her pioneering efforts likewise revitalized creative writing in Waray and strengthened regional literary networks through organizations such as the KATIG Writers Network. As both an accomplished writer and an indefatigable cultural worker, Professor Alunan has ensured that the voices, languages, histories, and imaginations of the regions continue to flourish, securing their rightful place within the national literary canon and introducing them to readers beyond the Philippines.

Edwin Mateo Caliolio, who hails from Lamitan City, Basilan, has committed his life to building institutions that create opportunities and strengthen communities. A graduate of Silliman University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, with a minor in History (Class of 1985), he later earned his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Santo Tomas and pursued graduate studies in business administration at Ateneo de Zamboanga University. His years at Silliman not only honed his intellect and leadership but also nurtured the Christian values that would guide his life’s work. As he himself recalls, it was at Silliman that he first encountered the University’s ideals of Via, Veritas, Vita, an experience that transformed his understanding of leadership as a vocation grounded in faith, integrity, and service.

As President of Southern City Colleges, Caliolio has transformed a family-founded institution into one of Western Mindanao’s leading educational establishments. Under his stewardship, the institution expanded its academic offerings, established additional campuses, opened a School of Allied Medicine, and embarked on the construction of the Southern Medical Center, broadening its mission from education to community development. His leadership reflects a long-term vision that embraces innovation while remaining steadfast in the belief that education is a powerful instrument for social transformation. Beyond the campus, he has championed scholarship programs, strengthened academic excellence, and fostered an institutional culture rooted in service, ensuring that quality education remains accessible to deserving students across the region.

His commitment to institution-building extends beyond education to public service, healthcare governance, and civic leadership. He has helped strengthen hospitals, improve access to essential healthcare services, and support the advancement of higher education through his service on the Board of Regents of Western Mindanao State University. During the 2013 Zamboanga Siege, he placed the resources of Southern City Colleges at the service of the nation, allowing its campus to serve as a command center and refuge for government forces and rescued civilians. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he guided the institutions under his care with resilience and compassion, ensuring continuity of operations while safeguarding the welfare of employees and the communities they served. These endeavors reveal an institution builder whose vision of leadership has always been inseparable from service to others.

For more than four decades, Rev. Dr. Juancho C. Campañano has pursued a vocation of compassionate service, integrating pastoral ministry, healthcare chaplaincy, theological education, and interfaith engagement across the Philippines and the United States. A graduate of Silliman University’s Master of Divinity (1989) and Master of Theology (1995) programs, he later earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1999. His theological formation at Silliman deepened a lifelong commitment to embodying the University’s ideals of Via, Veritas, Vita through ministry grounded in compassion, scholarship, and service to humanity.

Throughout his distinguished career, Campañano has emerged as a leader in healthcare chaplaincy and spiritual care. He currently serves as Regional Spiritual Care Specialist/Manager for Prime Healthcare, overseeing spiritual care programs at Mercy Medical Center, St. Joseph Medical Center, and St. Mary’s Hospital in Illinois. His leadership has introduced innovative programs such as Spirituality Group Therapy in behavioral health settings, daily spiritual reflections that reach more than 10,000 healthcare workers across eight hospitals, and interdisciplinary initiatives that integrate emotional, ethical, and spiritual support into patient care. As a Board Certified Chaplain, he has likewise served in major healthcare systems, correctional facilities, and police departments, while mentoring future chaplains and seminarians, facilitating critical incident stress debriefings, and promoting holistic care that embraces people of every faith tradition, culture, and background.

Campañano’s ministry has likewise bridged faith communities, academic institutions, and civic organizations. Since 1996, he has served as pastor in numerous United Methodist congregations in Illinois, helping congregations become welcoming and reconciling communities, organizing interfaith initiatives, leading mission programs, and fostering dialogue among Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and other faith traditions. Earlier in the Philippines, he pastored churches throughout the Ilocos region, established the Northwest Luzon Conference Foundation, and contributed to strengthening ministerial leadership. He has also taught philosophy, ethics, logic, and world religions in several American colleges, authored books on spirituality and Christian living, and presented widely on chaplaincy, spirituality, and mental health. His ministry has earned recognition through honors such as the Bishop’s Ecumenical and Interreligious Award, reflecting a lifetime dedicated to compassionate pastoral leadership, inclusive spiritual care, and the transformative power of faith in both church and society.

Raised in Dumaguete City, Cris Jude Lacsican has built an illustrious international career at the intersection of business leadership, digital transformation, and financial inclusion, while remaining deeply rooted in the values she cultivated at Silliman University. A graduate of Silliman University High School (1996) and Bachelor of Science in Business Management (cum laude, 2002), she later earned her MBA from the Asian Institute of Management in 2008. Her years at Silliman shaped a leadership philosophy grounded in service, integrity, and the conviction that education is ultimately a means of empowering others.

Across nearly two decades of leadership in Asia and Europe, Lacsican has spearheaded complex organizational transformations in global financial and technology companies. Her career spans leadership roles with ING, NN Group, FWD Insurance, and Grab, where she now serves as Country Head of Grab Financial Group Philippines and Vice President for Cities. She has led large-scale transformation initiatives across more than a dozen countries, championed customer-centered innovation, strengthened regulatory partnerships, and advanced digital financial services that expand access to lending, insurance, and digital payments for millions of Filipinos. Under her leadership, Grab has deepened its commitment to inclusive growth by helping transport operators, microentrepreneurs, merchants, and underserved communities participate more fully in the digital economy.

Lacsican’s impact extends beyond corporate leadership to initiatives that harness technology for community empowerment and national development. She has championed GrabAsenso, a nationwide program that equips local entrepreneurs and small businesses with digital tools and opportunities for sustainable growth; forged partnerships that advance tourism, financial inclusion, and digital innovation; introduced cryptocurrency-enabled GrabPay cash-ins to broaden financial access; and supported programs benefiting farmers, women, students, and grassroots entrepreneurs across the Philippines. Through projects ranging from modernizing transport systems and strengthening public-private partnerships to supporting Brigada Eskwela and community development initiatives in Negros Oriental, she has consistently demonstrated that innovation achieves its highest purpose when it creates opportunities for those traditionally left behind. Her leadership has earned numerous distinctions, including multiple Grab CEO Awards, while her alma mater recognized her early promise as Most Outstanding Student of the Year and Most Outstanding Business Student. Few officers have built a military career as distinguished as Commander Edwin Somera Mananquil. A Dumaguete City native, he has more than three decades of service, rising through the ranks of the United States Navy to become one of the few Filipino-born officers to attain the rank of Commander. He entered Silliman University High School in 1977 and graduated in 1981 before returning to his alma mater to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, which he completed in 1997. He later undertook advanced professional studies at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., earning certification as a Reserve National Security Professional. His years at Silliman instilled the discipline, integrity, and spirit of service that would define an extraordinary career dedicated to safeguarding lives, strengthening institutions, and advancing national security.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mananquil assumed leadership roles of increasing responsibility across the United States, Europe, and Southwest Asia, helping shape military readiness, emergency management, and strategic policy at the highest levels of the U.S. Navy. As Operations Program Manager of the Commander, Navy Installations Command, he directed global emergency operations across more than seventy naval shore installations supporting over 300,000 personnel. He authored and implemented enterprise-wide emergency management policies, strengthened operational readiness, and led large-scale exercises that enhanced the Navy’s ability to respond to natural disasters and national emergencies. Earlier, while serving on the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, he coordinated the development of the Secretary of Defense’s Orders Books, aligning strategic priorities across combatant commands and contributing to policy decisions with far-reaching operational and budgetary impact.

Mananquil’s leadership has been most evident during times of crisis. From overseeing joint operations in a forward operating base in Southwest Asia to coordinating emergency response during Hurricane Katrina, supporting humanitarian missions following the Haiti earthquake, strengthening security at strategic naval and NATO installations, and directing emergency preparedness efforts during major hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic, he has consistently demonstrated calm judgment, operational excellence, and an unwavering commitment to mission success. His distinguished service has been recognized through numerous military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, multiple Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Beyond his military career, he has remained a committed Sillimanian through active alumni leadership and community service, reflecting a lifelong commitment to the University and the values that first shaped him.

Dr. Junice Lirza Demeterio Melgar has advanced women’s health, reproductive rights, and community-based primary healthcare in the Philippines for more than four decades. A physician, public health advocate, researcher, and community organizer, she is the co-founder and executive director of the Likhaan Center for Women’s Health, one of the country’s leading organizations providing comprehensive healthcare services to underserved women and marginalized communities. Since its establishment in 1995, Likhaan has grown from a single clinic into a network of community-based health programs serving Metro Manila, Bulacan, and Eastern Samar, delivering healthcare to approximately 46,000 women, men, and children annually while training thousands of community health workers and women leaders. Under her leadership, Likhaan received an unrestricted US$5 million grant from Melinda French Gates’ Pivotal Foundation in 2025. It is the only organization in Southeast Asia to receive this distinction, affirming the global significance of its work in women’s health and community empowerment.

Throughout her career, Dr. Melgar has combined medical practice with evidence-based advocacy to expand equitable access to healthcare. She played a pivotal role in the nationwide campaign that led to the passage of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012, providing expert medical testimony, contributing scientific research, organizing broad civil society coalitions, and serving on the technical panels of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Beyond legislative advocacy, she has been a leading voice in public health research, authoring and co-authoring influential publications on reproductive health, maternal mortality, adolescent pregnancy, and health policy, with studies appearing in respected international journals, including The Lancet. Her expertise has likewise shaped national and international policy through service on the World Health Organization’s Gender and Rights Advisory Panel, longstanding membership in the International Initiative on Maternal Mortality and Human Rights, and active participation in United Nations and regional policy forums advancing women’s health and human rights.

Dr. Melgar’s contributions have earned widespread national and international recognition, including the Dakila Award for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, the EPIC Award for health service delivery, and recognition by CNN Philippines as the country’s “Family Planning and Reproductive Health Wonder Woman.” Yet, despite her international stature, she remains deeply committed to grassroots service, mentoring community health workers, strengthening local health systems, and empowering women to become advocates for their own health and well-being. A 1973 graduate of Silliman University High School, Dr. Melgar embodies the University’s ideals of Via, Veritas, Vita through a life of compassionate service, fearless advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to social justice. Her work has transformed the lives of countless Filipino women and families while influencing public health policy and reproductive rights discourse across the Philippines and beyond.

From his roots in Sagbayan, Bohol, Dr. Albert Mutia Salamanca has emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s leading voices in climate change adaptation and resilience, ensuring that scientific research informs policies and practices that improve the lives of vulnerable communities. He entered Silliman University in 1986 and graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He later earned a Graduate Diploma and a Master’s degree in Environment Management and Development from the Australian National University before completing his Ph.D. in Geography at Durham University in the United Kingdom. His years at Silliman nurtured his passion for environmental stewardship and scientific inquiry, laying the foundation for a career that has placed him among Southeast Asia’s leading scholar-practitioners in climate adaptation and resilience.

Currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute–Asia Centre in Bangkok, Dr. Salamanca has helped shape climate adaptation research and policy across Asia and beyond. His work bridges the worlds of science, governance, and community engagement, ensuring that research translates into practical solutions for those most affected by climate change. He has led and managed landmark regional and global initiatives, including the Adaptation Research Alliance, the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Platform, and the Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network, strengthening collaboration among governments, development organizations, and research institutions. His scholarship has also advanced influential concepts such as equitable resilience and transformative disaster risk reduction, helping redefine how climate adaptation is understood and practiced throughout the region.

Dr. Salamanca’s impact extends beyond research to the lives of communities confronting the realities of a changing climate. Early in his career, working under the mentorship of National Scientist Dr. Angel C. Alcala, he helped organize the coastal communities of Anilao and Mabini, Batangas, contributing to the establishment of the Philippines’ first non-island marine and fish sanctuaries, an enduring model for community-based marine conservation. Since then, he has advised ASEAN and United Nations initiatives, contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the UNFCCC’s Warsaw International Mechanism, and championed policies that amplify the voices of Indigenous Peoples and other climate-vulnerable communities. Whether developing ecosystem-based adaptation strategies, advancing climate finance, or strengthening regional cooperation, Dr. Salamanca has consistently demonstrated that rigorous science finds its highest purpose when it serves people. His career stands as a testament to the transformative power of knowledge in building a more resilient and sustainable future.

Artist, curator, and cultural advocate Cristina “Kitty” Sollesta Taniguchi, born in Manila and raised in Dumaguete City, has dedicated her career to advancing Philippine visual arts while nurturing generations of artists in the Visayas. She entered Silliman University in 1974 and earned her Bachelor of Mass Communication in 1978. She returned to her alma mater to pursue a Master of Arts in English Literature, which she completed in 1985, and later undertook doctoral studies in English Literature. A former faculty member of Silliman University’s Department of English and Literature, she found in Silliman a fertile environment where literature, visual imagination, and cultural engagement converged. This influence continues to resonate in her work as an artist, curator, mentor, and cultural advocate.

Over more than four decades, Taniguchi has established herself as one of the country’s foremost visual artists, distinguished by a body of work that seamlessly bridges painting, sculpture, poetry, and cultural heritage. Her figurative works, often inspired by mythology, literature, and the strength of women, have earned recognition in the Philippines and abroad through exhibitions in China, Egypt, India, Serbia, England, the United States, and other international art centers. A three-time recipient of the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, she has represented the country in the Beijing International Art Biennale, the China Changchun International Sculpture Symposium, the Luxor International Painting Symposium, and numerous other prestigious exhibitions, affirming the global relevance of contemporary Filipino art.

Beyond her achievements as an artist, Taniguchi’s enduring legacy lies in building spaces where art flourishes and communities thrive. In 1992, she founded Mariyah Gallery, which has since become one of the country’s most respected independent art spaces and a creative home for emerging and established artists alike. Through the gallery, she pioneered artist residencies, organized children’s art workshops, launched the Terracotta Art Festivals and Competitions, mounted traveling exhibitions that brought Visayan art to national audiences, and opened opportunities for local artists to engage with international networks. Her leadership in initiatives such as the Open Dumaguete Biennial Terracotta Art Festival, Anonymous Animals, and numerous collaborative exhibitions has strengthened Dumaguete’s identity as a vibrant center for artistic innovation and cultural dialogue. These endeavors reflect a lifelong commitment to ensuring that art is not merely created but shared, cultivated, and passed on to future generations.
