Dr. Ariniego Donates Additional P10 Million for Scholarships in Medicine
Outstanding Sillimanian Dr. Romeo P. Ariniego has donated another P10 million to Silliman University to establish a scholarship fund for medical education in Silliman.
The donation was given by Dr. Ariniego during the Founders Day Celebration last August, around the same time the Art Gallery, which was named after him, was inaugurated and had it soft opening. The same Art Gallery was established with funds from Dr. Ariniego. Earlier, he had donated a sizeable portion of his collection of artworks by Filipino masters.
One of the country’s top cardiologists, Dr. Ariniego allocates the additional P10 million for scholarships for academically deserving but financially challenged students who are entering the Medical School in Silliman.
Qualified recipients are those who meet the following criteria: part of the Top 10 per cent of the graduating class in any public or private school, have passed the NMAT, and have been grated admission into the Medical School. They must also be children of any of the following: staff personnel of Silliman University with salaries within the lowest 20 per cent brackets of current salaries in Silliman; qualified dependents of families residing as citizens of Dumaguete for at least seven years and who were beneficiaries of the 4Ps program under which the qualified recipient was a graduate; or qualified dependents of families residing in and are citizens of any other town or city in Negros Oriental for at least seven years and who were beneficiaries of the 4Ps program under which the qualified recipient was a graduate.
Dr. Ariniego’s scholarship is intended to further capacitate those without the necessary financial resources to acquire good education and pursue medicine. His generosity to Silliman and intent to support students for medical education reflect and were inspired by his own experience as a student in Silliman. Dr. Ariniego worked his way through college. While completing his pre-med education in Silliman, he was a student assistant. Among the tasks that he did was helping in gardening and the upkeep of campus grounds. Dr. Ariniego remains grateful to Silliman for the experience.
In 2010, Silliman conferred on him the prestigious Outstanding Sillimanian Award in Medicine.
