SU alumnus shortlisted to the 2021 NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists

Physicist Dr. Marvin M. Flores, a Silliman University (SU) alumnus, has been shortlisted as one of five young exemplary scientists to bid for the 2021 National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) Talent Search for Young Scientists. Flores virtually presented his scientific paper last March 23, 2021 entitled, “Constraining Stealth Supersymmetry with illuminated fat jets at the Large Hadron Collider.”

The Talent Search for Young Scientists is a project of NAST PHL to encourage young people to pursue a career in science. The best three scientific papers will be receiving plaques of recognition and a cash prize of PhP100,000 for the First Prize, PhP50,000 for the Second Prize, and PhP30,000 for the Third Prize. The First Prize Winner will also be receiving a research grant worth PhP500,000. Those with special citations will be receiving a cash incentive of PhP10,000.

Flores is currently an assistant professor at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.  In 2017, Marvin obtained his PhD in Physics from the University of the Philippines and was awarded Most Outstanding PhD Graduate of the UP Diliman College of Science.

Quoting from a previous interview by Mark Raygan Garcia, Marvin says, “The more you achieve something, the more you give your best to maintaining the quality of your performance.” Flores, who graduated from SU with a Bachelor of Science in Physics, summa cum laude in 2009, was a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar. His academic distinction at SU is even more remarkable considering the economic obstacles that Marvin overcame throughout his undergraduate years.
