Alumni Update November 30 – 6 December, 2020

Silliman University (SU) commemorated the 195th birth anniversary of Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, the University’s founder, with a floral offering and prayer, December 3, 2020 at his bust located at the Silliman Hall grounds.

Horace B. Silliman died on May 4, 1910 at 84, leaving an astounding legacy of selfless contributions to Cohoes, New York, as well as capital funding and scholarships for Hamilton College, Union College, and Mount Hermon Academy, building the Silliman Lodge in New Jersey (a home for girls, affiliated with the Christadora settlement house in New York City), and establishing Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines.

SU commemorates both his birth and death anniversary as part of its yearly tradition.

We share with you the Horace B. Silliman Prayer, offered by University Senior Pastor, Dr. Noriel C. Capulong, during the floral offering at the bust of Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman.

We thank you O Lord for the gift of memory because of which we can remember with thanksgiving those people who had made possible  what Silliman University is now. We thank you for the life of Horace Brinsmade Silliman by whose kind and thoughtful gift of an amount made possible the establishment of what is to become the Silliman University that we now know today. Thank you for the gift of generosity which you have bestowed upon Mr. Horace Silliman, that even though he was never able to come over and see this place, still his spirit continues to be experienced as one of the gifts of the Spirit as we continue to pass on this generosity to others especially in a time of crisis like what we are having now.

Bless our simple act today of honoring his memory and his distinct place and contribution to the history and existence of Siliman University. May we continue to cherish and honor his memory as a man used by God in advancing His mission and redemption plans in this part of the world. Bless also his heirs, back in the US. May they also continue to live in the shadow of your love and care while cherishing well and giving due honor to the memory of their beloved patriarch. May we all be imbued with the same spirit of selfless love that we especially our alumni and friends can always practice and pass on to others as they continue to express their own gratitude to our beloved university through various expressions of generosity, the very same spirit that made possible what is now Silliman University.

All this we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
