Alumni Update October 3 – 9, 2022

Each of us has his or her Silliman story. This time we share with you Mr. Marvel K. Tan’s Silliman story, entitled, “The Finest University – A belated tribute to our Alma Mater”:

I came upon yellowed files of our eldest sister today. Having been totally orphaned at 13, she became my guardian. I was surprised that she had files of letters directly from Dr. Herbert Fitton, Dean of the College of Business Administration in my time, with enclosures of my semestral grades each time, plus personal notes of encouragement about how well I was doing in school. I haven’t seen those letters until now and I was nostalgically overwhelmed to think how very lucky I was indeed to have had the educational nurturing few could ever have; the Dean of my college was my guardian angel! He took on that responsibility of moulding me as well, like my own parents!

I then began to fondly recall that Dr. Fitton, [as with] the deans of other colleges, were not the only ones enriching student life. There was the Student Counsellor Program in the dorm in my freshman and sophomore years; our weekends as dorm interns were never without interesting opportunities to join the various discussion/fellowship groups on Arts and other engaging preoccupations of interest to students far away from home. I can mention many more of the enriching moments one can imbibe in the holistic education within our university campus, one cannot ever hope to find elsewhere!

Indeed, the finest and unmatched quality of education we can be extremely proud of with our beloved Alma Mater is the holistic nurturing of those fortunate enough to have passed thru its portals.  What many of us are and have become today can be traced to that “fork in the road,” when faced with several options where to pursue higher education, we decided to take the path to the portals of Silliman University, the finest university! Aren’t we such God’s favoured children!

Belated Happy Founders Day to all!
