Alumni Updates May 8 – 14, 2017

The Dumaguete Alumni Chapter commemorated the 107th death anniversary of Dr. Horace Brindsmade Silliman on May 7, 2017 with a floral offering at his bust located at the historic Silliman Hall grounds.

It has been a tradition of the Chapter to honor the life of the man that founded Silliman University. Dr. Silliman died on May 4, 1910 and was buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands Albany County, New York.

Chapter officers present during the floral laying were: Leo Dennis G. Mamicpic – President, Rosewell R. Cataylo – Secretary, Minerva Mae B. Magdamo – PRO, Rolando Venturanza Magdamo and Rodolfo D. Juan – Board Members. Also present were Melanie Grace G. Doromal, daughter of former Silliman President Dr. Quintin S. Doromal and SU’s Alumni and External Affairs Director, Ruben N. Bokingo.

After the floral offering, the group had a merienda cena and was joined by the immediate past president of the Dumaguete Alumni Chapter, Roberto D. Montebon and wife, Ana Ceniza – Montebon.

A group of Silliman University High School Class 1975 batch mates who call themselves the “Caboodle” converged in Bali, Indonesia for a 5-day barkada destination reunion on May 2 – 6, 2017. This high school peer group of nearly 42 years derived the group’s name from the American phrase the whole kit and caboodle.  Caboodle is an archaic term which means group or collection, usually of people.

The reunion not only rekindled the Silliman spirit but was also a time to reminisce on the good old high school days.  Of the 12 Caboodle members, 9 made it to the Bali reunion, namely: Lyna Labata-Medonza (retired accountant – Davao), Chona G. Bollos (retired accountant for international NGOs – Dumaguete), Aleta Bonotan-English (nurse – Maryland), Josette T. Escarda (former staff assistant to a politician – Manila), Monchilou Suelto-Calderon (nurse – New Jersey), Ophelia Dimaculangan-Saad (internal medicine and nephrology – Dumaguete), Erwina Frances Bokingo-Jalandoni (pediatrics and public health – La Carlota, Negros Occidental), and Lizette Cruz-Montaño (accountant – Melbourne, Australia).

The other members of the Caboodle are: Sharon Arevalo-Capule (obstetrics and gynecology – Manila), Christina Ho-Chua (health fitness instructor – California), Ferlie Joy Amante-Montenegro (nurse – Colorado), and the late Ylva Grace Maxino-Villamor (anesthesiologist – Dumaguete).
