On September 30, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake devastated Northern Cebu. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the disaster has claimed at least 72 lives, injured more than 550 people, and affected around 611,000 residents across the region.
In response, Silliman University, through its Continuing Calamity Response Program, is mobilizing a coordinated relief effort that includes both disaster response and psychosocial support for affected communities. The University will work in partnership with the Cebu Conference (CCI) of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), which has an active presence in the area, and the SU Cebu Alumni Chapter.
The Office of Community Engagement and Service Learning (OCESL), together with other University units, is collaborating with the Silliman University Student Government (SUSG), whose Sillimanian Initiative continues to gather donations in cash and in kind to support immediate relief operations.
The National Service Training Program (NSTP) is assembling personal hygiene kits packed in utility buckets, while the faculty and staff of the University are pooling resources to support the PSP training and rehabilitation activities.
The organized Psychosocial Processing Team will conduct post-trauma stress debriefing sessions on November 6-9, 2025, in areas identified in coordination with the CCI and the Silliman University Alumni Chapter. T he team will also distribute school kits prepared by the pupils and students from the School of Basic Education.

These collective efforts not only bring much-needed assistance to those in distress but also cultivate empathy, compassion, and active citizenship among our students and the wider Silliman community. They embody the University’s enduring spirit of Christian service, a living expression of our motto, Via, Veritas, Vita (The Way, The Truth, and The Life).
We call on our alumni and friends to support this continuing mission. Your donations will help cover the transportation, food, and accommodations of our volunteers, as well as sustain the relief operations in Northern Cebu. Any amount you can share will make a meaningful difference.
By these simple yet significant acts of service, we help alleviate the suffering of the people of Northern Cebu. Let us make them feel the warmth and compassion of the Silliman spirit.
