The Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) hosted a Nursing Research Workshop on July 29, 2024, gathering 19 faculty members from SUCN alongside the Director of the Center of Leadership Excellence in Nursing (CoLEN) at the William Barry Thompson Hall.
The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ research skills through the use of digital tools, applying ethical practices, and employing effective methodologies.
Distinguished speakers at the event included Dr. Dave E. Marcial, Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center (GSC) director, who spoke on Data Collection, Analysis Tools, and AI Technology; Dr. Freslyn Lim-Saco, SUCN research coordinator, on Integrative Review, Search Strategies and Tools; and Dr. Enrique G. Oracion, Research and Innovation Office director, on Crafting a Winning Research Proposal, emphasizing collaboration to elevate the quality of nursing research.

A highlight of the workshop was the interactive segment where research teams presented their proposals for critiquing by Dr. Marcial, Dr. Oracion, and Prof. Jusie Lydia Siega-Sur, CoLEN director. Valuable feedback enriched the proposals, deepening participants’ grasp of rigorous research methodologies.
Participants actively engaged with digital tools, honing their skills in proposal writing and presentation. Reflecting on their experience, participants noted enhanced proficiency in using digital tools for data collection and analysis. They mastered advanced search techniques on platforms like PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar, crucial for efficient literature retrieval and ethical research documentation.
In addition, they experienced hands-on practice using literature search tools, allowing them to apply their knowledge and improve their proficiency in managing research information. They also learned to utilize technological tools and resources to design, write, and refine research proposals, addressing research problems effectively and presenting robust strategies for conducting nursing research.
Looking ahead, SUCN plans to build on this success, continuing to equip faculty with up-to-date research methodologies, highlighting SU’s commitment to advancing nursing education through innovative research and ensuring faculty members remain leaders in nursing scholarship and practice.
